Consider the 7950, or even the 7970. Tahiti is a beast of a GPU, you won't have to worry about CrossfireX, and your VRAM problems will disappear faster than you can blink. Come to the ... red side.
Otherwise, a 3gb 580 is the only real upgrade you could get. A 2.5gb GTX 570 would alleviate your VRAM problem, but in terms of GPU power, it's not much of an upgrade from your 470.
You could hunt for a used 480 online, I've seen a few on ebay with acceleros already installed.
EDIT: Also, whatever you do, wait for the 7950 to enter the market after then end of this month. It'll throw a wrench into AMD's and Nvidia's current pricing schemes, and drive down prices of 40nm cards like the 5xx series and the 69xx series.
