Finding an Open Port

I live in BC, Canada and according to Shaw I have now "upgraded" my Shaw modem from the older Motorola model to the Cisco DPC3825 Wifi modem. The Cisco model is one that they have provided for me and I hooked it up today with everything with this new modem is working on their end according to them as well.
Right now I'm having a real hard time finding an open port though.

I go to http://www.canyouseeme.org/ and type in any port number and it says:

Error: I could not see your service on 70.67.2.117 on port (3389)
Reason: Connection timed out

3389 is a bit alarming because that's the one that Remote Desktop uses.

Any idea how to get a port to open up?

Login to your Modem/router usually 192.168.1.1 and search for Port Forwarding or Applications & Gaming (this was my stock cisco/linksys firmware option). And then forward port 3389 to your local IP and test again on canuseeme or grc.com

you also need the ports to be open on the isp side, not sure how it works on the other side of the atlantic but over here you either call them or log into your isp's site and open them up yourself.

ISPs tend to block ports too.

Bell blocks ports 22, 25 and a few others. They may be blocking the RDP port on purpose.

one way of doing this quickley would be to use nmap on yourself smile.gif then you can do a

nmap -p 1-65000 -sS -T5 70.67.2.117

To grab all your open ports, but yeh you will need to forward the ports you want to use to a ip from your router.


What are your trying to do by "finding a open port?"
