Recommend me an SSD

Thread Starter

Looking to buy an SSD finally , currently running a raid 0 setup but I want faster.

I was looking for at least 200GB or more since I use lots of space.

Crucial M4 256GB?

Any others to compete with?

Crucial M4 would be my suggestion. They do have the known 5200 hour issue, but a fix is already in the works and should be released soon. That's been the only issue with their SSDs so far.

What are you installing on your main drive that you need 256GB? I'm running a 128GB, I have Windows, all drivers and applications (office, itunes, etc.), SW:TOR, BF3, WoW, and TF2 installed on it with 30GB spare.

I would install windows on it and apps, games etc my steam folder is 138GB thats why.

Unless I uninstall the games that are useless it would help.

I would highly recommend the Corsair Performance Pro over the M4. Maybe consider the Samsung 830...but I like the Performance Pro more lol.

I like everything about it lol. Toggle NAND, the speeds of reads and writes, the Marvell Controller, the fact that It owns all Sandforce POS. It is basically an improved Performance 3. They are great for RAID as well.

And @ the 256GB range, the M4 "sucks" as in the drive is not as fast as the other drives when comparing the three.

Right, but the speeds of the M4 are same compressed and uncompressed data. Most other drives display compressible data transfer speeds... although, with the Marvell Controller in the Perf Pro, sounds like it would perform a bit better than the M4 if it was running a later version of the Marvell controller.

Although it's not really the hottest around here, I'd also like to add the Intel 510 series. The algorithm for Intel's drives have always been considered one of the best, if not the best!

Yep, usually the compressible vs compressible problem is only with sandforce drives since the way they work is that they compress data before writing it to the NAND. With the Marvell controller on any drive they do not compress the data before writing.
Look up reviews on both @ 256GB...the Corsair Performance pro wins smile.gif
