New rig help

Thread Starter
Okay, so, I am new to overclocking and I plan to build my first new rig. But I am still not too familiar with a lot of things. I will need you guys out there to walk me through, completely.

Everyone seems to be talking about the P5W DH Deluxe in this forum. Can someone tell me exactly why it's so popular and perhaps.., good? Such as, what does it have that is so appealing? As I am also about to look it up..

I'm planning to get two HDs..so that shouldn't be too complicated but suggestions are appreciated. BTW, should i get Raid-0?

Another thing is cooling...I am planning to use water cooling because it appears to be more efficient in terms of dissipating heat, but I have absolutely NO experience with it. I definitely need help on..how to look for a good water cooling system.

Now...what case should I get? Memory? PSU?
Now Video card...ATI or Nvidia? I always Had ATI in the past but I would take Nvidia because the SLI seems to be very efficient and attractive. I would need one that supports my 22" Acer Widescreen monitor.

Sound card?

For the CPU I would either get the X6800 or E6700...if they are in-stock now. My budget..around $1,000 USD would be nice. I would go up to $2,000 but that would be tops.

Thank you alll...for reading if you didn't post lol

::EDIT:: I forgot to mention..what about a Physics card? and for the RAM I'm leaning towards Corsair...Please specify why you recommended the RAM you recommended.

do you want a super awesome top of the line nothing better PC? because that 6800 alone is $1000 but a 6700 is only 500, teh best SLI/Crossfire setup is 600, good OCable PC6400 ram is 250, big PSU to support it all- 300, Motherboard- 200, case- 100-200, HDs another 200, Watercooling- 150+, Sound card- 100. that's a lot of money that $1000-2000 will barely cover. probably come in around <2500.
What i say:
Thermaltake Armor 169.99
PCP&C 1KW 499.99
Asus P5WDH-Deluxe 269.99
Intel E6700 525.00
2xWesternDigital10,000 Raptors, 150GB each, RAID0 289.99x2= 579.98
1xATI X1900XTX 349.99
and 1 ATI X1900 CF edition $359.99
Creative X-FI Platinum 178.99
2GB G-Skill 269.00
and whatever WC system you can piece together or a Thermaltake Big TyphoonVX (i think around $50)

so that all adds up to 3202.92 plus what ever cooling you choose. i guess i was a bit off on my price estimates, but this is pretty much teh best system you can get that makes sense. other opinions welcome of course.

The P5W-DH is a great board and easy to overclock but why is it popular beats me, I guess it's because of the x8x8 PCI-E lanes and thus it can run CrossFire and SLI with hacked drivers........except neither of those are appealing to me so one X1950XTX and 7950GX2 will be more than enough for today's games IMO.

IMO, the P5B Deluxe is a better choice: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131045
$70 less and overclocks as good, except no support for Dual Graphics card and SLI is not even worth mentioning because even with the hacked drivers performance is not good.

RAM: This where pretty much everyone will agree, the G.Skill DDR2 800HZ with the black heat-sink is the best choice, capable of doing 1100mhz on a 2.4v withc cas 4. The 2GB kit is $270, well worth it.

If your budge is $2K, then the E6700 will be a great choice but most people will say get the E6600 because of bang for buck but "IF" I had a $2k budget, I'd go for the E6700, fudget about the X6800.

For PSU, the PC Power & Cooling Silencer 610W($170) is the best choice or better yet, the Silencer 750W ($220). Cases? I like Thermaltake cases the best, personally I like the Shark the most but most fellas like the Armor series, I don't.

cgrado: you can't take two X1900XTX's and put them in Crossfire. You'll need a X1900 Crossfire Edition and a X1900XT(X). Same with the X1950 series; you will still need the Crossfire Edition card.

My suggestion is basically the same as Nasgul's. This will be a good rig:

MoBo: ASUS P5B Deluxe Socket T (LGA 775) Intel P965 $194.99
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe $319.99
RAM: G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 800 $269.00
Video: Leadtek Winfast PX7950 GT $259.99
Sound: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic $121.99
HDD: 2X Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS 250GB $155.98
DVD: LITE-ON 16X DVD±R DVD Burner Black IDE $30.99
PSU: PC Power & Cooling S61EPS EPS12V 610W $159.99
Case: Apevia X-Navigator ATXA9N-BK/500 Black Steel $84.99

Total: $1,591.91
If your budget is $2,000, there is like ~$300 or so for watercooling. Ask in the watercooling section about that.

Comments:
  1. Alternative video: SAPPHIRE 100168L Radeon X1900XT 256MB GDDR3 $249.99 - I would NOT get any more expensive than either the 7950GT or the X1900XT, since DX10 should take hold in about a year or so.
  2. If you are dead set on dual graphics, this ASUS P5W DH DELUXE/WIFI-AP Intel 975X for $269.99 is the one to get. It will run Crossfire (supported) and SLI (modded drivers).
  3. Regarding RAM: Corsair is also good, but the G.Skill rocks, and just is cheaper at the moment. The comparable Corsair kit is the 6400C4 which costs $317 at the moment

I don't know what's your point but I wouldn't call your system "complete".........well, I'd add "P.O.S" compared to mine but then again, what is your point?

What is the DX10?

Any more rig suggestions? About the RAM again...Corsair? OCZ? G.Skill? Specify if possible.

hahahaha ok gents .. calm down

cgrado: yours was a *tad* over over budget, plus my comment about the Crossfire. Nasgul had good advise, with which I agree and reflected in my picks for components.

DX10 = DirectX 10. It's a new rendering method which will be used in Windows Vista (Nothing else) and NO currently buyable cards support DX10. Best to save up some money for a decent DX10 card in a year or so. IMO the first gen DX10 cards will be a bit crap, so it's best to go for something a bit later.
