Format MBP and Install Lion

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I've had a macbook for a little while now but am pretty much an avid PC user.

So I found a tutorial on installing LION onto a USB bootable drive, but I've never actually done a full format or anything on a Mac before.

I need to do a full out format so that I can boot camp my MBP this time as well, as there were unmoveable sectors in my drive originally that stopped me from doing a bootcamp with windows, and the research i found said I had to do a format to fix this.

Thanks guys!

I think you just need to download Lion from the app store and then run it in Snow Leopard and it should install and give you all the formating options.

If you have ever installed Windows before then you will have no problem installing Mac. It's exactly the same, it just looks slightly different.

Ya I feel stupid actually asking it because I'm actually a developer but not a avid mac user. I use it mostly as a laptop for school cause the battery life is bad ass, but I'm really going to need a windows environment for development of certain languages this semester and last time I used parallels to do it, and it was brutal!

I'll give it a shot tonight!

Just for the record, I've had awful luck getting various Macbooks to boot from USB media - the workaround for that has been to create a 10gb or so partition on the HDD and extract the disk image's contents to that partition rather than USB media (installing the OS off your temporary partition, then deleting it and expanding the main partition when all is said and done).

What about burning it to a bootable DVD and doing it that way?

And if I were to do it that way, whats the best way to burn it, and how would I boot from the DVD?

side note - If I run it right off the macbook, how does it handle itself from not deleting itself when I do the format?

Thanks

Well when I went from Mac OS X 10.3 to 10.4 with a retail disk I just put it into my PowerBook when it was switched on and then I ran it like any other program. It then restarted and went though all the formating options and general computer settings (time, name, language etc.) and in the formating options there was options to keep all the files. I think it will be the same thing when you install Lion without burning it to a DVD or putting it on a USB bootable device.

I've never had an issue installing OSX via USB. There is an option to auto boot from teh USB in the OS, and there is a keyboard combo you can hit at start up and boot from it easy.
