X79 or Z68 for new rig

So I postponed buying a Sandy Bridge chip since Ivy Bridge is coming up this year, but since I've had the opportunity to save up some cash it's seems it might be a good idea to pickup an X79 mobo and possibly the i7 3920.

Now I could save the money and buy an Ivy Bridge system when they are released but it seems that there will be a greater potential to upgrade the X79 system since Ivy Bridge will probably be the end of sock 1155's life.

So what would be OCN's choice if they were in my situation ? I mostly game and do some light video editing with AAE and Sony Vegas.

I would go for a 2500k socket 1155 system mate. Gaming PCs are more reliant on the GPU performance than brunt CPU power. For bragging rights yep agree go for the x79 build but I reakon you won't see much difference in gaming. just my 2cents.gif

btw - if you look at my rig, I play BF3 maxed at over 100fps and avg around 95fps.

Thanks for the input, I'm probably going to pick up the Ivy Bridge version of the 2600k if Intel delivers with their promises.

Definitely go for an 1155 board and an Ivy Bridge cpu if gaming is your main concern. You could even start on it now and just pick up a used 2500k/2600k and sell it when Ivy hits.

I would but since CES is happening all the new hardware is being unveiled to the public and I'd like to have all the the new gear. Also isn't Z77 a new architecture for socket 1155 ?

Backwards Compatible
All Ivy Bridge chipsets and motherboards support both Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge CPUs.
RAM Support
Ivy Bridge based processors will officially support up to DDR3-1600, up from DDR3-1333 of Sandy Bridge.
Overclocking
All Ivy Bridge chipsets will also allow overclocking of K-series processors.

note that most sandy bridge chipset will require a BIOS flash (unless its a Gen3 board)will support ivy bridge chips with the exception of B65 and Q67 chipsets smile.gif

So is it a good idea to wait for the Z77 boards to release or just pick up a Z68 board and flash it to support IB?

If I were in your shoes, I would probably wait until Z77 is released. I don't know what benefits it may have, but worst case is you could get a Z68 board at that time if you didn't like the Z77 selection. Its less than 3 months away.
