Ok, I have a question for the community on getting comparative data for the Helix.
I picked up new GT AP-15s, new Swiftech Helixs (Helixi?), and have an order in for both versions of the new Corsair SP-120s (Performance Edition and Quiet Edition).
I spent a good chunk of the weekend trying to find a way to get a comparative view for these fans given my limited existing gear and no real test equipment, and ultimately I settled on the following:
- Ruler on table
- 140.4 Rad on it's side (I forgot which one, no marks on it and bought it 3 years ago)
- Half a piece of loose leaf tapped on ruler side of rad which lies fairly flat against the rad when no fan running
- 120mm fan attached at one corner (due to size mismatch) in push configuration
- Using a Scythe fan controller from that old loop measure how far the paper moves away from the rad towards the horizontal at Max, 1500 RPMs, 1200 RPMs and 900 RPMs.
My question is does this type of rig tell me anything USEFUL about the cooling ability of the fans?
I can say that the GT's, Helix's and some 140mm medium speed Yate Loons I had from my earlier loop all gave different results. The GT's performed the "best" in this test, so I have to think it tells me something, but it's not clear to me that this test tells me something that will relate to effectiveness in a loop.
If this test IS doing something useful I'll do up vids of the fans I have and post them for comment.
Let the snickering begin....Edited by Reglar - 5/29/12 at 9:12pm
