Problems started after watercooling! - Page 3

If the waterblock hollow groove does not sit flush for the two inductors/chokes and bending the PCB, it will have previous result.

Try to put the stock cooler back and try again, there's no other way to rule out the waterblock is the issue.

just wondering, why did you choose to not use PK-1 on the vregs? because i did, so now i'm worried. =) it's not conductive or capacitive at all, so i don't think there'd be any problem.

After many hours of troubleshooting, I have the following...
a. The card behaves the same with its original aircooler
b. The card behaves the same in the second pci express slot

Possibilities...
a. The improper openings of the waterblock caused bending of the pcb and the death of the card.
b. The motherboard pci slots are problematic (will check soon using a friends card)
c. Somehow the chipset drivers of the mobo are ruined and have to reinstall it and everyhting will be ok...

Obviously, option c. is my wishful thinking and dont even know if such a case can exist!? What do you guys think?

On the other hand, my friend ATIMAN told me that the heat of the PLX chip is not that high that could cause a problem even with the themal pad not touching it and unless there is a shortcircuit somewhere in the pcb, the card should work fine.

Hopefully soon i will be able to use another gpu (GTX580) to check the health of the pci slots of my mobo.

Any other ideas/opinions are more than welcome... I was really hoping  this would be a silly driver problem and not a 6990 card destroyed by the (very beautiful) swiftech epsilon waterblock...

Well, in pk1 site it says its non-conductive, while arctic ceramique2 states clearly its both non-conductive and non-capacitive. Thats why i preferred to use ceramique on the vreg.

But I believe the problem in my case is the bending caused by the not deep enough waerblock's housing of the 2 capacitors at the bottom center bottom of the card, that doesnt allow the pcb to sit correctly on all the mounting points of the waterblock...

Maybe what Atiman meant was PLX chip in 5970? The PEX 8647 has a bit rate of 5.0 GT/s in 6990.

Anyways, just keep an open mind until you rule it out what could be the real culprit.

Of course, open mind is the only way to efficiently solve problems...

Guys,

I have some good news and some bad news...

GOOD News...
I used a friend's 6950 card on my board/pc and it works perfect. So, no problem on my motherboard or pci slots or psu or whatever...

BAD News...
I put my card 6990 with the original aircooler installed in my friend's pc and the card... is dead. By the time it gets recognized by the system and it reboots, the system freezes at windows 7 glowing logo point (i suppose this is the time the driver kicks in). This is exactly the same behavior the card adopted in my pc, after installing swiftech epsilon waterblock. GPU-z shows same eratic numbers before the reboot (but this could be because the driver is not completely installed due to lack of reboot ability).

So, unless i am missing something, my card is officialy DEAD.

The other good news are, that Gabe from swiftech is following closely my issue trying to find a solution eventhough he is at CES and its weekend as well. I really admire his professionalism!

Tomorrow I will investigate further the waterblock problem, will discuss it with Gabe and will let you know...

PLX is the company and PEX is the type of chip.
The atiman is right.
