x1900gt vs 7900gs

post #1 of 13
Thread Starter
I might be upgrading my gfx card but I still haven't decided yet for sure.

I'm debating b/w the x1900gt and 7900gs.
I know that the x1900gt is a bit faster but the 7900gs seems to overclock like nuts. Also I've heard that the x1900gt produces a lot more heat, but my main concern is the power consumption. I know that my psu will most likely be fine w/ the 7900gs since it handles my x850xt fine oced since the x850xt draws more power. But will it be enough for the x1900gt? My psu only has 18A on the 12V rail.

I'm now 100% sure that I'm upgrading as my 3dmark score is fine and all. Getting 7043 on 3dmark05 and 79k on aq3.

Suggestions?

I've repeated this several times, current 7xxx cards scare me, that G71 GPU it scares me with all the people getting faulty cards with the artifacting issue, so for that....

At this time the X19xxGT or XT are the better choice and also because it offers the HDR+AA features which nVidia currently can't.

Ok but, how about power consumption. Which one uses less power or at least on par with my x850xt ? I gotta know if this psu can run it.

What? you're too lazy to google? U bastad!

Ok, here's the deal:
X1900GT: Power Consumption. IMO I think it could handle it.

I used to have one of those with a 650 OC'd to 4.0ghz and you know how much power a 4.0ghz CPU can consume. So yes, the 430W can handle it, your CPU doesn't consume a lot of watts either. And BTW, I used to have upto 4 hdds hooked up to it also but I had a 6600 GT which didn't require a power connector.

Ok. So here is my last question. Should I hold on to the x850xt till dx10 is out or no? Because I'm not sure if 200$ will be able to buy a dx10 vid card. What do you think?

Here are my current socres:

3dmark05 = 7020, cpu score 5400
3dmark03 13702
AQ3=797xx 12k gpu and 12k cpu

all you had to do is put x1900gt vs 7900gs in google and it would have gave you way more info than any one here could give.

Tryed it and got mixed results with not being sure if my psu could handle it. But my biggest question is still not answered =)

I say keep your X850XT and wait for DX10. But if you really want a new card (depends on your gaming habits) I would go for a 7900GS or a X1900GT. As far as I know ATI has better image quality (not by much, but do consider the ability to run HDR+AA) while the nvidia card is cooler and less power hungry. It's a toss up; go with what's cheaper since you will be getting rid of it when DX10 comes out.

I'd go for whichever is cheaper...probably the 7900GS for the power consumption.
