[GamingBolt] Origin is required for all PC editions of Mass Effect 3 - Page 31

I think the only reason EA is forcing people to use Origin for BF3 and ME3 is because people are inherently lazy and don't like change (just look at all the backlash when this forum switched to the new format). Once you get used to it its not really a big deal.

As for the people saying that it will slow down your rig, no, it won't. I've got a pretty mediocre rig by OCN standards and its completely unnoticable (I even hid the taskbar icon lol) Whenever I want to play a game on Origin I just open it and play it.

And even if Origin is "spying" on me (which I doubt), who cares? Companies can't develop products that people will be interested in unless they know what people are interested in. Its not like a company as big as EA is just going to go around stealing credit card info, the only thing they would be doing would be looking for consumer tastes/preferences and maybe personalized advertising (its the future, haven't you seen Minority Report lol)

Personally I'm looking forward to playing ME3 on launch day.

Some Steam games are like that too, but they're aware of this and are getting much better about allowing games to properly work in offline mode. Whereas EA's Origin is like, "You want this game? Download Origin. Don't want to? Then you don't get your game."
I remember the good old days of C&C being owned by Westwood, back when Red Alert and Tiberian Sun were actually fun to play online. Pre-2003 era, back when DSL was new but still feasible. Oh and registering the game was entirely optional. Now, since it's owned by EA Games, you can't bypass this registering thing if you want to play the game. Simple things.

You're acting like someone who has no brain of their own and instead, reads the opinions of others and regurgitates them as their own, regardless of whether the points being made have any solid ground or even make sense.

Steam started out the EXACT same way and was HATED for MANY YEARS after. You also had to register Valve games with Steam to play them LONG before EA properly started pushing EA accounts.

It's only really over the past few years that people stopped complaining (so loudly). The same thing will happen with Origin because regardless of what you think, the amount of gamers who actually care about all this is TINY.

There are hundreds of millions of gamers out there. You think the MASSES of people who play the Sims give a toss about whether they need to use Origin?

You think the majority of gamers who dont use internet forums like these REALLY care as much as you do? You think the majority of PC gamers REALLY care about Steam as much as the vocal fanboy?

EA has already started selling third party games and obviously aim to continue to do so. All they need is a bit more time and support and they'll be up and running properly.

Origin has been out for about 6-7 months and has only been out of beta for less than half of that.

By the time it's (probably) been around for a decade or so like Steam has, things will be very different.

I have no problem with people not wanting to use Origin, but when so much of the reasoning and accusations are so lacking in accuracy, logic and even truth..............it just makes you wonder.

Uh? What? Exactly what do you think it's altering...

from oirgin faq: Origin implements a permission change that results in Windows, not Origin, reviewing the filenames of every file in a directory and can have the appearance of a scan.

it makes it sounds like oirgin messes with windows; that makes me nervous

Origin implements a permission change that results in Windows, not Origin, reviewing the filenames in the ProgramData/Origin folder. This is an ordinary Windows function, not an information-gathering process.

At least try and understand what is actually happening if it worries you. Don't just start freaking out.

I am giving one last warning. No more comments like "Crying", "qqing", "fanboy" or any other form of unprofessional language. Otherwise, I'll start handing out warnings/infractions.

Please learn to respect other people's opinions. This applies to both sides.

so it doesnt go outside of the origin folder? and if its in origin will we still be able to use mods on the game(ie. texture mods; put femshep in a polka-dot bikini, stuff like that)

LOL Look at my rig, even I have origin in the background and I didn't notice it until I went out of my way to check just a second ago. I'm not a fan of origin as I have many, MANY steam games(94 to be exact) and I only have Origin for BF3. I dunno, I don't like that they made Origin necessary because I can't switch to it. I invested in Steam waaaaaaaay too much to switch completely over to Origin. (That and it's so much less developed and only a small selection of games are available atm.) But I'll live with Origin for now. Until I stop playing BF3 for good.
Ea seems to be continually improving origin and at this point I have no problem with it. It is just not as mature as steam. I just wish I could have all of my games on one client but I see why they are doing this. If you want to compete with steam that is what you have to do.

Let's be clear:

Valve = actually physically coded Half-Life & CS and following series as well as (so-called) sequels
Valve = saw the opportunity to capitalize on a market before the market was broad (2006/2007) in 2003
Valve = created a digital distribution front to capitalize their own market on games already available to their base
Valve = continued to support modifications to it's original games, while supplying a fresh new source to new games
Valve = actively collected hardware statistics from the beginning because they needed to research the middle of the road market (blue collar generally spend more money on frivolous things than white collar or the poor class) to maintain a performance bias in their own games
Valve = never collected personal data and allowed users to opt out of collecting the information in the first place
Valve = only had HL, CS, DoD, TF, & a handful of other mods to release under 'Steam' originally with very select few games on top in the begining
Valve = continues to offer an outlet with a huge consumer base to small independent developers

EA = does not and has never made games though they do now own quite a few of the once up and coming developers
EA = did not see the opportunity to capitalize on a digital distribution market until 2011 where it was already largely in Valve's court
EA = whether directly or indirectly they have a say in what content can and cannot be made / called DLC / modified by the developers under their umbrella which results in few mod's and unfinished games
EA = has a continuing harsh and abrasive stand on what it believes is their right to deny a consumer access to games that consumer already owns for any number of reasons
EA = has and always will be a publishing house, just like those for books, who are in control of nearly everything except the story and base content
EA = has collected non-personal but definitely identifying information about users to further their pursuits in securing a front for direct-to-desktop-digital-distribution without any way of 'opting out'
EA = has had plenty of games to kickoff Origin with since 1991, yet they remained with a 'download manager' while Valve continued to grow through Steam

Who would you rather support? Most of us would say, "Valve!". And I would agree to an extent. I would fully support Origin if:

A) Origin was offered as an outlet to small independent companies
B) Had an 'opt out' for data collection
C) Titles were available in more than one digital place, like they were before
D) Used the Sims and other games already under the umbrella (out since 2000, modern graphics version since 2003/2004) to kickstart Origin (ask me why!)

But that isn't how it went down. And it's not how they operate either.

EA Download Manager

452

EA Origin

457

The only difference is that they tacked on a messenger client on the side in Origin. For the most part, Origin is just a rebrand of Download Manager as something "new and fresh" when BF3 was released.
