I haven't seen any screenshots of Steam doing it, so if you have them post them. If they upload to Facebook , amazon, and others, then bad on them. In the Sandbox they go.

Also again Steam gives you the option to opt out of scans and they do run a Steam Hardware Survey. Which is made available to everyone.

But please walk away knowing that the majority of the programs on your PC collects data anonymously. Windows does plenty of it, whether you like it or not. Even when Windows asks if its ok, and you answer no, some forms of data is still sent to Microsoft about usage. Origin isn't the only one who does it and it isn't new, at least they implicitly say it in their EULA.

The EULA is just them covering their asses saying that they're allowed to collect data regarding your OS, hardware, probably things like MS patches, possibly registry stuff. But it does not collect actual document data on your computer like so many have been saying. Notice the recent smartphone software fiasco with the software taking all the data? Consumer awareness is increasing and there are some hardasses out there, these types of things in EULAs are necessary. People read too much into them is the problem.

It's like everyone saw the South Park episode about Apple's EULA, where they started taking random people to become a human centipede, and panicked as if they were going to be taken in the middle of the night.

Akamai is a business that provides web content. They've been serving EA for a long time.
They're not transmitting personal data to Akamai. That's accessing their store and website.
Quote:
These services enable companies to reduce the complexity and cost of deploying and operating a uniform Web infrastructure while ensuring unmatched performance, reliability, scalability and manageability. Akamai's services give businesses a distinct competitive advantage and provide an unparalleled Internet experience for their customers. Akamai's intelligent edge platform for content, streaming media, and application delivery comprises more than 11,600 servers within over 820 networks in 62 countries. With headquarters in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Akamai provides services to companies worldwide. For information on Delivering a Better InternetSM, visit www.akamai.com.

Infact, whenever I click any link inside of Origin and browse around their storefront: the akamai activity in procmon always appears. So clearly, it's about their storefront.

Want to know why it's sending data to facebook?
Because EA has a number of games on Facebook. The Sims, Dragon Age, and more.
Do you honestly think they're sending your personal data to FACEBOOK?! LOL

As for Amazon, Amazon AWs is Amazon Web Services. Amazon runs web hosting and servers. They're actually extremely powerful solution, especially for companies.
http://aws.amazon.com/
Read into it. It's quite interesting.

I might not know EA's network infastructure for a fact, but I'm pretty sure some of it might be located with Amazon and then they use something like Akamai to deliver that content to consumers/users. Now, that's an educated guess, but it certainly is more feasible than saying "OMG ORIGIN IS STEALING MY DATA TO AMAZON AND FACEBOOKZ"

Now... what were you saying about "not knowing how to use a Process Manager"?

So they will dismiss screenshots of their data being uploaded to other companies.

I know exactly what you mean, after I caught origin trying to upload a copy of a excel spreadsheet containing a full list of clients private information and bank statements I had in my documents, it was then and there that I pulled my ethernet cord out and uninstalled Origin. I will never use that data mining software again.

That is more a lesson on how to use Google. You gave an explanation which is all I asked for. I had no idea how EA is affiliated with these companies. Now I do and it changes my opinion somewhat on Origin.

It still belongs in a Sandboxed partition.

Omega, the tech level you're arguing at now I can't compete. It was at this level that I had to defer to others last time everyone got this far in the debate as I'm not quite this tech savvy to argue at this point. I do know that last time that it got this far in the Germany thread that there WERE some valid counterpoints but it's been like 6 months since that debate.

Last i remember when we got this far, someone else pointed out how Origin's walking of the directories was far different than Steam and that there was no logical reason for the particular way it went about it. People were arguing over if it was actually opening files or just walking the directory or something like that.

He's not being technical, its called using common sense. It baffles me how you have argued your point so vehemently when its plain you don't even truly understand what your arguing about.

@XAslanX

So I take it you contacted the authorities?

I would also like to congratulate Omega for being the first person to backup and provide evidence for Origin and its activities, instead of the usual "OMG NO THEY DON'T, YOUR DUMB" type response usually netted amongst these forums. It's almost like he works for EA.

Knowing the business relationships of two companies is far beyond common sense, that unless you researched it you wouldn't know, so try and troll again please.

I will admit that Origin does infact seem to go into more directories than STEAM does, further away from where a game or game related data would be. Like I've seen Origin go deep into My Pictures, and I have yet to see STEAM go there. But I've seen STEAM go deep into my Dropbox for no reason too.

I don't know everything, but my bet on that would be Origin is simply stupid (or dumber than STEAM). It's doing more work than what needs to be done. STEAM seems to always be scanning links/shortcuts (.lnk files) in the start menu which is far more efficient to finding games/programs to add to STEAM where Origin is just running around through random stuff. I believe you said something earlier similar to this effect.
