AMD Phenom II x4 960t "Thuban" overclock?

Thread Starter
Hello everyone at overclock.net! For Christmas, I built my first PC! This weekend, I wanted to try and do a slight overclock in the processor, an AMD Phenom II X4 960t. When I run CPU-Z, it tells me the code name is "Thuban". I did some research and saw that they could easily be unlocked to 6 core processors, but this news was from a while ago and I'm not sure if it's just an error in CPU-Z. I have an Asus M5A97 motherboard, and this allows me to use their AI Suite to overclock. I did their "Fast" profile and it bumped me up from 3 ghz to 3.3ghz. I ran OCCT and everything seemed stable. Note that I'm running with the processors stock fan.

So my questions are, would it be relatively safe to try and unlock the cores in my bios? Are there any repercussions if it doesn't work? Would you recommend going for the "Extreme" option in Asus' AI suite? With the "Fast" overclock, my idle temps are around 27 C, and the highest it got while going through OCCT was 59 - 61 C.

Thanks for looking at this! If you want to see my build, it should be in my profile or whatever! thumb.gif

1. Unlocking the chip into a Thuban would be fine on the board, as long as you don't push it too far, on account of the 4+1 power phase design. Insanely high OCs as a 6-core will result in CPU throttling, which would result in performance loss when the system is under load.

2. I personally don't advice overclocking using software, the BIOS is the only way to go for more efficient and stable OCs.

3. The stock fan can only get you so far. The threshold for the chip is 62c and you should always be within the 55-56c range to be on the safer side and leave a little headroom. So i'd advice against overclocking further until you get a decent aftermarket cooler.

4. There would be no repercussions if the cores don't unlock mate.

I just got one of these 960T's. The main issue with it is the power consumption with 6 cores unlocked. Once you hit ~62C it throttles, so 4-5 cores seems to be the sweet spot.

i think it is a 4+2, so it should be good.

congrats, xdy.
