Help a lady out! - Page 2

Okay, 400$ for a Desktop, or a Laptop? I'd recommend building one yourself so you can learn about the PC and how it works, and because it's cheaper. Pre-assembled PC's are usually 20% more costly to buy custom built over building it yourself. If you took 450$, and then divided it by 5, you'd get 90. That's 90$ more dollars you could put toward your PC, or for the shipping costs of the parts.

You can Private message me If you'd like to know a little more about all of this 'PC-stuff' that you are slowly being revealed too. Also, Welcome to Overclock.net. I hope that you stay, and become a permanent resident of!

AMD A4-3400 Llano 2.7GHz Socket FM1 65W Dual-Core and GIGABYTE GA-A75M-D2H FM1 AMD A75 for $144.98
Case - (Cooler Master Cases under $50)
CORSAIR Builder Series CX430 V2 - $44.99
GeIL Black Dragon 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 - $24.99
HIS IceQ H657QO1G Radeon HD 6570 1GB 128-bit DDR3 - $74.99

Thats $339.95 before HDD, DVD Drive, and Operating system. All new parts here. You could probably get some better deals in the OCN Marketplace with some digging. Hope this helps.

OR

Normally I don't like to recommend Barebones Kits. But when someone has a limited budget sometimes a BBK is not always a bad thing. I had my Dell Dimension 4700 die on me about 4 years ago and with very limited budget I had no choice. So I dug about for a barebones kit. Here you go:

Biostar N68S3B DiabloTek Barebones Kit - Biostar N68S3B Board, AMD Athlon II X3 445 OEM, CPU Fan, Corsair 8GB DDR3 RAM Kit, 500GB HDD, 24x DVDRW, DiabloTek Mid Tower Case, 400W Power Supply - $249.99 before a $50 rebate.

This BBK has:
Biostar N68S3B GeForce Socket AM3 Motherboard
AMD Athlon II X3 445 3.1GHz AM3 OEM Processor
Thermaltake CL-P0503 70mm CPU Cooler
Corsair CMX4GX3M1A1333C9 XMS3 4GB DDR3 RAM(1333MHZ DDR3)x2! Thats 8GB!!!
Seagate Barracuda 500GB SATA6G 3.5" Internal HDD

Now the Case and PSU are not spectacular. But they will suffice for the moment. All you need now is a Graphics card and a Operating system, Keyboard and mouse.

This is the route I would go as well.

My version:

CPU/mobo/gpu: A8-3850/asrock A75 $197 shipped.
Ram: Kingston HyperX Blu 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 ( $24
Psu: Neo eco 400 $35
Case: Any $20 case
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 200GB $50 shipped (hard drives are pricey right now - maybe better getting used on ocn)
odd: Any $20 sale on newegg

Total = $346 shipped thumb.gif

Winxp can be had for cheap usually and works just fine.

You got some good advise already so I won't rehash what's already been said. I am a little curious though: You said you play on your boyfriend's computer, is he also not technologically inclined? Or are you just looking for a second opinion?

Well, my boyfriend isn't really wanting me to save up for anything. After all, he has been bumming the most of the rent off of me for the past three months. He's had this computer for at least two years now, and it's a beautiful machine. It's just a laptop that had to be transformed into a desktop due to the randomly screwed up screen. But it runs everything so smoothly at top graphic settings, and it makes me really jealous. He lets me use it every now and then, but honestly I want my own pretty piece of equipment to play with.

He seems to be technologically inclined, but I really don't think he wants me to spend any money for myself. Especially on something "expensive" like a computer. But I really need it.

Everyone's input so far has been excellent. Really love the great advice and information provided. And, due to the warm welcome, I just may stick around. Seems like a pretty good community here.

I'm already learning just browsing these forums. I've always wanted to get more in depth with computers but never got the chance to. A while back I was able to bypass everything the school I went to put up, but that was it. XD

So, I heard that only certain graphics cards work with tvs. Is that true? If so what should I look for then? Is there like a... I dunno, certain phrase or some crap that'll tell me if it's compatible?
