Stay away from XFX 7970 Black Edition, design flaw - Page 7

well at 107 i would classify that as its WARNING STAGE. and do something about it, however those VRM are safe up to 120.C so it TECHNICALLY is not a design flaw since it does comply with the AMD hardware standards, however yes admittedly it does fall on the Hot side...i would probably crap open taht cooler to check to see if you can modify it so that the VRM touch the heatysnc before getting a new cooler or card

i grabbed an IR gun from work and measured the VRM temps on my XFX 7970 BEDD. i did this at the card's stock settings with overdrive disabled. my case has a side fan and i pulled the side panel off and set it about 12" from the card, still pushing air in that general direction.

case with side panel removed:
IMG_0380.jpg

IR gun:
IMG_0379.jpg

Idle at Desktop
Core temp: 54 C (reported by CCC)
VRM temp: 48 C (measured)

STALKER CoP benchmark, 4th run
Max Core temp: 79 C (reported by CCC)
Max VRM temp: 78 C (measured)

Metro 2033 benchmark, 6th run
Max Core temp: 77 C (reported by CCC)
Max VRM temp: 76 C (measured)

3DMark11, standard settings free edition
Max Core temp: 73 C (reported by CCC)
Max VRM temp: 67 C (measured)

Furmark, 10 minutes
Max Core temp: 86 C (reported by CCC)
Max VRM temp: 89 C (measured)

there's too many uncontrolled variables to determine why my numbers are different than hardware.fr. all i know is that i feel better about my VRM temps at the moment. i'm going to test them after a couple hours of BF3, and also with the card overclocked which should change things quite a bit.

You do realize that XFX does this, more than likely, on purpose. They want them to go out so you have to buy a new one since they try so hard to not honor their warranty, which they just recently cut. There is literally NO excuse, rhyme, or reason to buy XFX now; not even the illusion of a lifetime warranty. Buy VisionTek if you want a lifetime warranty.

@Porter

did you try that gun on the GPU to see if the temp matches to what CCC is showing?

The prettiest case you've got there tongue.gif ^_^

Suggesting visiontek warranty because it's lifetime suggests you have never dealt with visiontek warranty.
Visiontek and Diamond sit at the bottom of customer service compared to all the other gpu brands brands (Ironic that they offer the longest warranty).
XFX is still lifetime so long as you register the card, otherwise it's 2 years which is reasonable.
Majority of people on these forums groan about warranty yet upgrade within those two years rolleyes.gif.

Keep in mid thats surface Temp. Its 10-20C higher a layer down.

no i didn't point the IR gun the core because the temp reading given in CCC is truly the core and i don't have access to it through the HSF. back at ya on the case tongue.gif

hardware.fr's numbers were surface as well. that's all i was trying to do; compare to their numbers.

Do you REALLY think the BEDD cards have lifetime warranty if you swap coolers? lachen.gif

They also state that you HAVE to tell them if you modify the card in any way. So if you modify it and DON'T tell them, bam...warranty void, they're out of having to service your card. Guess what else? If you DO tell them, warranty void because it was a user error. That's all they have to say, and you're screwed.

2 years is JUNK compared to all the other companies out there. Not to mention that they'll pull anything and everything to void your warranty. I'm sorry if this offends anybody, but there's absolutely NO REASON to buy XFX cards anymore.

If you bought one, and are happy with it, good for you. But don't come crying here because they won't honor their warranty. I'll just respond with "Told ya so".

yeah I know the CCC reading is accurate, but by pointing the gun at the core you could see if the difference is 10-20C like the previous poster said...
