Looking For a Gaming Laptop!

Thread Starter
I have been thinking A LOT about this recently... I currently have the desktop in my sig and am about to go into grade 11 and am moving to a school where I am required to purchase my own laptop... My parents have been talking to me every now and then about expenditures and while I am usually really good with money, when it comes to my computer, I can't help but spend... My parents are suggesting that they will pay about $1K for my laptop, and any extra, I will have to put on myself...

The other thing that came to mind is that it really won't be too long before I go off to university and will be living by myself, and the cost of maintaining both a laptop and a sweet gaming desktop can be quite costly as a university student... This has made me consider selling my desktop and my 19" Dell E198WFP. That means that I will be purchasing a decent gaming laptop that will last a couple years and keeping my 23" Dell U2312HM because it will come in handy for photo editing, gaming and other tasks... Nevertheless, I need your help to choose a laptop for me... now keep in mind that I don't need it until June, but something I learned from building desktops, is that it is never too early to start planning and soaking up info!

Here are my ideas...
  • Needs to have 2 HDD slots (I will add my 60GB SSD, to go with the laptop's mechanical HDD)
  • Good bang for the buck
  • Reliable and sturdy build quality
  • Budget is not set yet, however keep in mind that I will pay for anything over 1K, so that extra money should be worth it.
  • Should run Skyrim on Ultra preset at its native resolution
  • Must be portable
  • Good Mic

Find a baseline of what you want, and customize it from there.

Sager.
Next question.

Really though, you've set yourself a slightly impossible goal, depending on your definition of "portable". For 2 HDD slots it'll end up being pretty big (15"+), unless you want to replace the DVD-drive with an HDD drive. Playing any game at a high rez / settings will need a good GPU/CPU as well.

The problem is, a good CPU/GPU = more weight as LESS battery. Its a delicate mix.

check out Sager NP8150 or 8130

Keep in mind you'll have about a 1-hour to 1.5 hour battery life on either of those.

I do need the 2x HDD slots, however as for the resolution of the screen... a 720p/900p screen is more than enough, and that is all I will be gaming on... I am only using my 1080p screen for photo editing and watching movies...

Sager all the way but, don't buy directly from them. Buy from a reseller... Exotic , Malibal to name a few. You will save some money and get much better service buying and warranty wise. Going directly through Sager for warranty issues is a nightmare.

The only cards that can run Skyrim close to ultra on a laptop are the AMD 6990m or Nividia 580m. Sager/Clevo 8170, I7, 8gm ram, 6990, 500gb hd and win 7 for $1425 on Exotic. Best bang for your buck high end lappy bar none. Upgrade for the 580m for about 5% boost is $330. Not worth it.

Another great deal is the pc force which is built of a MSI barebone. Same config as above with a Nividia 570m. $1200 17"... $1150 15" Both have 2 bays, rare in a 15"

Sager/Clevo 8130 with a 560m and only one bay $1070

Cream of the crop right there.
