AMD Phenom II x4 630 in BF3

Thread Starter
I was not sure weather to post this in pc gaming section or amd section or whatever, but I have a friend who's dad is looking at possibly upgrading their computer too run battlefield 3.

Their computer cannot run the game smoothly, the current spec is an AMD Phenom II x4 630 processor 2gb of ram and a 4350 video card.

I was pointing him toward upgrading too four gigabytes of 1333 mhz ram, and a 6770 graphics card with a new PSU. He is not looking to max it out or anything, just run it at a smooth framerate, say medium ish settings. He may not even need a new PSU, as I have not checked inside to ensure that it has a 6 pin PCIe connector or what the wattage of the current PSU is.

My friend took a computer hardware survey online and it stated that his cpu processor was not powerful enough, I am here to ask if anyone on here has any experience with this particular processor with battlefield 3. I am quite certain that battlefield 3, being efficient for a quad core processor would run fine on this processor.

Thank you in advance.

The processor is fine for playing the game.. it's solely the video card. it's geared towards HTPC or silent computing.

If you're looking at the HD 6770. do your self a favor. just grab a HD 5770 the 6770 is just a rebranded one.. for about $80 on criagslist..

if you want a new card.. a HD 6850 or 6790 is a good choice.

The AMD Athlon II X4 630 propus is in essence. AMD k10 architecture with L3 cache disabled... (so phenom II minus L3 cache) - which affects ever so slighty over all performance.. but with a decent oc of about 3.5-3.6GHZ.. it will manage.. Sure it's no phenom II or core i5 2500k.. but it's STILL a moder quad core.

EDIT: 4GB of ram would help. but as cheap as ram is.. and it being BF3. 8GB of 1333MHZ ram would be just perfect.

Thanks for your input. Unfortunately a 5770 is not readily available in this country, but the 6770s are going cheap at the moment.

I would not be able to run 8 gigabytes of ram because they are running 32 bit windows, and I don't imagine he wants to spend another $160 nz on a new 64 bit windows just so he can spend another $80 on ram tongue.gif

I was quite sure the processor would be capable for what we are going for; thank you for clearing this up.

If you can grab a HD 6770 for about $120- and down... i would say go for it..

while the Athlon II X4 wont max the game (actually with the right gpu it may)

it's a good cpu overall.. my laptop uses a similiar one..

Wait a little longer for the lower 7000 series cards to come out?

If it had to be now, 6870 can take the game at 1080P Ultra on most settings with AA/AF disabled. So base your choice on that. The RAM should definitely be upgraded.

The reason it might not say the CPU is ready for BF3 is due to a bottleneck created by it that restricts the graphics card from performing at it's max potential. You shouldn't have an issue unless you have a top of the line card or crossfire multiple cards.

you may experience some problems such as stutter with only 4gb of ram. Im not sure how bf3 runs with 32bit windows tho. I had to upgrade from 4gb of ram because i was experiencing some problems.

As far as I aware the game was coded to run on a x86 system so are you guys sure that 4 gigabytes of ram will not be enough? I am quite sure it would be. It would be held back down to around 3.2 gigabytes though being a 32 bit version of windows 7.

And yeah I know that a good 7000 series would be good, but you guys have to remember, we are computer performance hobbiests, my friend and his dad are not smile.gif he just wants something that will run the game, not max it out. I was actually thinking of trying to get a gtx 550 in there but they are out of stock at the reputable seller in New Zealand. frown.gif

I said 4 was plenty. I believe a user on here tested 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB on BF3 for performance changes and there wasn't one.

I'm not saying a 7970 or something, just a 7850 or something when they come out. I also said that a 6870 handles the game outstandingly, so anything around that would be great. If you have to go Nvidia, 560 Ti is the best price/performance IMO, but might be a bit more than what they want to spend.

ahh good, I thought 4 gigs of ram would be plenty, thanks thumb.gif
You do have a point - maybe we can see how much these 7850s or something are going to cost - but I am really just trying to get this to run battlefield smoothly for as little as possible - perhaps when the lower end 7000 series GPU's start getting released, maybe a nice 6850 or similar will go down to clearance cost! And yeah, I used to own a gtx 560 ti myself, and I definately agree you - amazing bang for buck - however yeah that is pushing it for the budget I believe - well I dont think there is even a budget, other then getting it running for cheap! thumb.gif

I am aware of this, thanks though thumb.gif but the general 4 gigabyte sticks, (2x2gb in this case) being limited to ~3.2 gigabytes due to being limited by the shorter binary codes in a 32 bit windows will still run much much nicer then leaving it as two gigabytes thumb.gif two gigabytes would be choking it, where 3.2 gigabytes should have just enough room to fit the battlefield application in along with windows and some firewalls and stuff, and the only way to do that is by running four gigs of physical memory

Thanks for your input guys, sounds like putting the 4 gigabytes of ram in, along with a new medium range graphics card is going to fit the bill nicely if he decides to go through with it.
