need a little help in overclocking

Thread Starter
hello all, I'm trying to overclock my unlocked cpu b50, the unlocked core is stable, been running it for months and it's never crashed, freezed, blue screened and it has ran prime95 for over 24hours. I'm trying to get to 4ghz, it might be alot to ask considering it's unlocked and all but I want to give it my best shot.

Currently I have it to 3.7ghz prime95 has been running for over 5 hours, settings are:

Multiplier x15.5
bus speed 240
HT Link 2408mhz
NB 2408mhz
Dram freq 802mhz
memory voltage 1.65v
vcore 1.440v while stress testing it goes up to 1.464v ( not sure why )
max temp 48C

from what I have there, is it safe and am i doing anything from? whats max voltage I can give the cpu?

Also I'd like to know whats better, tigher memory timings or freq?

It is rising because of Vrise from LLC. It is fine as long as the maximum it ever peaks to is not above your personal voltage limit. If it is above what you want then reduce LLC or reduce your DVID or Vcore. If it is no longer stable then obviously you will have the reduce the frequency then.

Max Vcore is 1.55v but has to be measured while under load. The rise in Vcore you're seeing is due to LLC or Asus's typical over volting which is normal. My setup runs all day 1.36v till I lean on it where it jumps to 1.51v with my current OC. The 1.36v on my setup is due to the fact I run Cool & quiet. Checking all the voltages under load is the only way to go.

Dram voltage you have is fine.

What is the CPU/NB voltage set at? Stock is usually around 1.1-1.2v. With 16GBs of ram you'll probably need a bit more than stock. Maximum CPU/NB voltage is same as the Vcore (max = 1.5v) but most can run around 1.3-1.4v to have a NB Freq at 2800MHz or so.

For HT Link Speed maintain 2000MHz +/- 200MHz for best performance.

AMD loves the tighter timings rather than higher Freq. You can run MaxxMem II and read the Memory Score to determine which setup gives the best performance.

Feel free to post back any other questions or PM me if you like.

Good luck and have fun!

Lower HT link as down to as close to stock as possible, reduce multi to 15x and set FSB to 250Mhz. Set the vcore to about 1.4-1.43, increase CPU/NB voltage to about 1.3v (1.35v for anything higher than 2700Mhz). Reduce DRAM frequency to 667Mhz. If stable, slowly increase the FSB in 5Mhz increments until you hit a wall. After that, slowly increase the memory until you find the sweet spot. Keep in mind that Phenoms' prefer lower mem clocks and tighter timings (that usually gives more of a performance gain). The CPU Vcore can be set as high as 1.55v, although only if temps are in check.

so 1.5v vcore wont blow my cpu up? lol, also I'd like to ask, i was playing around yesterday, i did get it to boot at 4ghz, but prime95 crashed it, by booting up at 4ghz does that mean I'll be able to acheive this by changing somethings around and increasing the voltage?

okey, it's on 15x multi, 250fsb, 1.44vcore, 1.35v cpu/nb, memory is on 677mhz, HT 2000mhz and NB 2600mhz I think, how long do i test this on prime95 before i start taking the fsb up?

I think your a little confused. Or I am lol.
The way I OC would be to first do a CPU multiplier only OC for base line results for max freq, max/min vcore required and temps. Stabilize with Prime95 for 8-12 hrs.
Than isolate the HTT (FSB is a outdated term) from all other areas and find the maximum/desired freq and it's settings to pass 3-4 hrs of prime95.
Next I combine the CPU and HTT OC settings and stabilize for 8-12 hrs.
Add NB Freq OC next and test for 3-4 hrs
and finally OC/tighten Ram and add into OC.
Test with prime95 for 24 hrs, 25-50 runs of LinX, 5-20 passes of ITB, SuperPi for a 32M run and maybe an overnight 8 hr run of Memmtest86 to finish it all off.

The way you're sitting right now your HTT is already raised. This is why your question confuses me lol. If you want it higher follow the directions above for best results.

Do you have all the Dram specs manually entered into bios? I see your Dram Freq is lower than stock (listed in your rig sig).

No. All it means is it can boot into windows at this point. The only way to find out for sure is to start testing and make small changes to your system as it is unique and using an unlocked CPU may, or may not be your friend when you go to OC it. Usually they OC better when locked, just depends on the chip.

See if this helps answer your question about what LLC does http://www.overclockers.com/load-line-calibration/
with my setup I run Full Calibration. You really need to watch voltages while under load with LLC enabled. It can be very useful. It's biggest use is to help offset Vdroop. If you read up on it more, there is more to the story that may benefit you.

Thanks for the link about the LLC, great info.

When I say FSB I mean CPU Bus Frequency, and thats set at 250, with the multi, what your saying there that you increase it as high as you can until its unstable, If this is what I'm understanding, If so problem I have I can't increase it more than what stock is which is x16, or am I missing something? sorry If i'm confusing you, I'm a complete nub when it comes to overclocking.

Also, I've changed my memory with these

http://www.ebuyer.com/239260-kingston-4gb-2x2gb-ddr3-1600mhz-hyperx-blu-memory-kit-cl9-1-65v-khx1600c9ad3b1k2-4g

Thought it would help my overclock, + the heatsink on these memory feel alot more solid and that they can handle more heat than the corsair.
