Build Log: My Upgrade To Core 2 Duo!

Thread Starter
Ello everyone, this is going to be the main place I post about my upgrade
to Core 2 Duo. Im going to take my rig as it stands and make three major
upgrades. Your thoughts and comments are appreciated, but I want to
let you know that this is not my first build. By the end of next week I will
have finished a Conroe build for a customer. I will let you know what I
have learned or any problems I run into. I'am going to take my time on
this upgrade but i will keep everyone well informed.

Possible Upgrade Choices:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6400
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 [Ordered 9/29/06] [Received: 10/04/06]
RAM: (2 x 1GB) G.SKILL 2GB F2-5400PHU2-2GBLA
NB Cooler: Thermaltake CL-C0034 [Ordered 9/29/06] [Received: 10/04/06]

Budget: $600

Unplanned Splurges:

Case: Centurion 534 [RC-534-KKR2] [Ordered 9/26/06] [Received 9/28/06]

HDD Cooler:VANTEC VORTEX 2 HDD Cooler [Ordered: 10/04/06] [Received: 10/09/06]

Fan Controller:Black Vantec Nexus Fan Controller [Ordered: 10/03/06] [Received: 10/12/2006]

Floppy Drive:NEC 1.44" Floppy Drive [Ordered: 10/03/06] [Received: 10/12/2006]

Cables: 10" Floppy & IDE Cables [Ordered: 9/26/06] [Received: 9/28/06]

Fans:Thermaltake Smart Fan II A2029 [Ordered 9/29/06] [Received: 10/04/06]
EVERCOOL EC8020 80x80x15 FAN [Ordered: 10/03/06] [Received: 10/12/2006]

Thermal Paste: Arctic Cooling MX-1 [Ordered 10/04/06] [Received: 10/09/06]

Goal: Take my existing rig and upgrade these three components: CPU,
Motherboard, and RAM. As always I'am on a budget so that will be kept
in mind. I also have to make a huge choice whether to purchase the
CPU and motherboard first or upgrade the RAM.

Existing Build:

Parts:

O/S: MS Windows XP Professional
Case: Antec SLK2650-BQE
HS/F: Scythe Mine 3
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 531 3Ghz
Motherboard: Biostar TForce U 775
RAM: (4x) Infineon 512MB 533MHz PC4200 4-4-4-12 2T
Graphics Card: Nvidia XFX 7600GS
Power Supply: FSP FSP400-60GLN
Optical Drive #1: LiteOn SHW-1653S (DVD+-RW)
Optical Drive #2: LiteOn SOHC-5232K (DVD/CD-RW)
HDD #1: Maxtor IDE 60.0 GB (Boot)
HDD #2: WD Caviar SE WD1600JS 160.0 GB (Storage)
Floppy: Mitsumi
Fans 120mm: Antec Stock Case Fan
Fans 80mm: (2x) CoolerMaster Ball Bearing
Etc: VIA PCI 3 Port Firewire Card

Pictures:

Other Thoughts: Im open to any suggestions on RAM and Motherboard
choices, but I'am dead set on an E6300. Like I stated earlier I have a
difficult decsion to make, either buy the RAM first or the CPU/MOBO.
Also I really prefer not to spend more than $500 on this upgrade but
my max is $600, which I think is more fesable.

Lookin' good, I'd upgrade the moboard, then proc, then RAM, as you should be able to do them in that order and always have a working rig.

One note about your cooler though: Have you given thought to turning your cooler 90 degrees, so it exhausts the hot air towards the back of the case versus throwing it up (or down?)? You'll likely see lower case temps if you do.

Thanks , The thing is Im pretty sure that the DS3 doesn't support
Pentium 4's. Correct me if Im wrong because if it does, that would the
way to go. Im hoping that I can outright buy both the motherboard
and CPU next payday. Even though my RAM can be considered generic
it has showed it can perform well. I just dont want it to hinder or even
bottle-neck the new CPU.

Well, ATM the heatsinks fan is pointing up so the air passes through the
PSU's 120mm fan and out the back. Do you think if I had it point to the
rear the temp's would be low enough to justify taking the motherboard
out? It never dawned on me that the air might effect the PSU in a way
that was negative.

Ok back on topic, I found out that the DS3 does infact support the Pentium 4 531.
So it looks like that will be my next buy, unless I can be convinced otherwise. Im
kind of getting tired of newegg and their " Garaunteed 3 Day Shipping". My last order
(last week) was shipped on monday and I didnt get it till friday afternoon. I also
have a shipment which was shipped on that same friday and wont be here until
wednesday. Looks like I might have to give ZZF a chance and see if they're any
better.

Ok well, you know how the NB gets hot on the DS3? I thought it would
be a good idea to go ahead and pick one up. I saw a website that had
a head to head match up of several NB cooler's but cant seem to find
it. Anyone have an idea as to what would be a good choice? I would
like it to be passive as well as copper and of course it has to fit on the
Gigabyte DS3.

dont get pasive coolers, if your case dosnt have a good airflow then your cooper nb cooler is almost useless..

buy an fan for chipset coolers or a combination of pasive and fan, which are more expensive tho

look under chipset cooler, make your pick

My airflow will not be a problem, my temperatures being 28C-CPU
and 34C-Case. I was looking for advice from people who had
actual expierence with their suggestion. That review I was talking
about had several copper/aluminum passive/active heatsinks and
the Zalman ZM-NBF47 beat them all out. I guess Im going to have
to find it
