its only slightly faster than a 580. Alot of people keep blowing it way out of proportion. Yes it is faster then a 580 but not 50%.

7970 for the future proofing, 580 if you want to save money (go used), or wait two weeks for the 7950 to be released.

The GTX 580 is still a great card, but no way can I recommend it over the HD 7970. It's better across the board and over clocks very well. My only suggestion would be to wait for the non-reference 7970 to come out unless you plan on water cooling.

HD 7970 All the way.......................

I own a 7970 and have previously owned a 580 lightning and I can tell you the the 7970 when mildly overclocked is a fair bit quicker than the 580. I would say go for gold on the 7970 if you have the cash.

agree Ratjack and AMD have had how long to develop this card. look at the 7970 review on guru3d and you'll see the stats. If you don't want to go 580 and you can wait for the next release Nvidia card i'd wait. remember the 580 was meant to compete with the 69xx series not the 79xx and it blew them away.

Its around 20% faster already at stock. Then you have to consider how insanely well the 7970 overclocks and its really not a hard decision

Doesnt matter what it was supposed to compete against. the 580 is what nvidia have right now. Kepler is nowhere to be seen - no dates no nothing. The first card they're releasing is the 560Ti upgrade, so it's going to be at least 6 months before we see the 780, assuming there are no delays

Little bit more expensive?

Cheapest average prices in Australia.

GTX 580 $535

HD 7970 $729

The choice should be between the 7970 and a 590...

GTX 590 $799

$60 difference between a 590 and the 7990 compared to $260 difference between the 580 and 7970.
