7970 or 580 ? What do you reccommand for this rig (see rig spec)

Thread Starter
What GPU should I buy to use with the rig below ? (I hesitate between the Nvidia's 580 and ATI's 7970)
I'm not especially looking into a future-proof GPU, just the best bang/buck current card for current games.

N.B: will play single screen only (no multi for me), and won't use 3D neither.

CPU: i7 2700K
Memory: 16 GB DDR3 1600 MHz (2x8GB)
HD: 150Gb SDD
PSU: some good branded 1000 or 1200W
OS: Win7 64bit
Mobo: P8Z68-V/GEN3
GPU: ? ? ? ? ? ?

I was just about to get the 7970 until I come here and see tons of ppl complaining of screen tears, flickering and bugs....
Is the 7970 to be avoid ?
the 7970 is new so its normal to have these issues...it will be solved but how many update waves will require to solve these ....its upto AMD but also u cant deny the 7970 is a beast

on the other hand 580 is mature and can play games very well @ 1080p...580 is a damn good card its just 7970's performance coming in the way

so its upto u whether u want a 7970 use it now and let the drivers mature along the way or u want to pick up a cheap 580(if u can find) enjoy it right away save the bucks for Q4 and pick a GTX780 and the 580 u have will do the job for physX or just sell it if u want....so its a WIN for u in both ways

No, not at all. What do these people expect? The card JUST came out... my god.. they need to wait for the drivers to mature... people are crazy these days rolleyes.gif

I would definitely go with the 7970 because according to a lot of computer review sites who have ran fair-test benchmarks, the 7970 is 10 fps fster than the 580...

If you plan to fold with that wonderful 2700K, get the 580. The folding software is optimized for Nvidia CUDA. thumb.gif

same as nvidia forums lol.

Of course the HD7970. Nvidia even dared and didn't reduce the prices of the GTX 580's.
The HD7970 runs cooler, costs 10% more for 20-40% more performance, runs quieter, draws less power, have much much higher overclocking headroom, can reach GTX 590/HD6990 speeds for $200 less, has double the VRAM & you can run three monitors (Eyefinity) which is not possible with a single GTX 580 (even If you won't use it, it is still a plus).
Do I need to say more?

Find a good deal on a GTX 570 or GTX 560ti 448 and wait for the GTX 780 to buy your long term GPU.

After they drop the 580 prices then this is a different story smile.gif. But now it is $500 and 20% to 30% slower & costs only 10% less. I think the price/performance at this time is screwed up. The 7970 is sure overpriced. But the 580 is way overpriced for what it really is.

I am not defending a company against another. Both AMD and Nvidia want our money. And currently the GTX 580 is not a good deal at that price.
I give the best advice as possible as I can and it doesn't matter if it is Nvidia or AMD.
But the HD7970 is priced better than the 580 currently... If you can understand me.

Here's a nice comparison averaged out over many games from TechSpot on this 7970 review.

474

Hope that helped. Take if for what it's worth. If the you pick up a used 580 which are selling on OCN for a lower price then price / per formance will go to the 580. At current pricing the 7970 would be the best for new buyers.

Difference of 7970 vs 580 atm on single 1920x1200 resolution monitors is 8 - 10 FPS.

Hope this helped. Good luck. Both great cards. Either will play games maxed settings right now at playable frame rates. smile.gif

The 7970 is not to avoid. 8 to 10 FPS makes a big difference when gaming at say, 50 FPS on a 580 and 60 FPS on a 7970.

It's true that the 580 is a bit cheaper, but right now the 7970 justifies its price considering that it also runs cooler and uses less power, and has A LOT of overclocking head room. So for gaming, even with the current drivers you can go for a 7970. When the drivers mature, not only will these problems be gone, the performance will slightly increase too.

Only get the 580 if you're going to fold a lot more than game.
