test bench(ish)

Thread Starter
Hello.

I've been mulling over the idea of making a test bench for a couple years now. I have a haf 912 that has been sitting around for the better part of a year since I changed up to the NZXT H2, and instead of trying to get a few bucks out of it, I figured I would go ahead and use it as the donating part for the main piece's of my build.

I have little to no experience with case modding, so I not fully certain what the outcome of this may be. I have around two months being laid off of work, and plan to take this slowly, so if this is the wrong area of the forum just let me know.

Right now, Im at the very base of the set up, and i just got the case full disassembled. I think I will borrow for the time being the HDD bay and the 5.25 optical bay until way further down the line when i have decided how I am going to house them.

pictures.

This first one I took after I had already started to disassemble. About ten minutes in I figured I would start a thread, as I post very rarely, but lurk all the time and figured this would be a good way to start conversation with the community.

This one is after I had the mobo tray, back, tops and was working on getting the rest apart.

This here is showing basically what i intend to still use. The purple parts are where Im going to cutting down and making smooth. The green is where I am considering putting some sort of bracket a little later on in the build for support.

I have not fully set on a theme, but I am strongly leaning towards doing a wood and copper type theme, Making the wood have a polished look, and the copper nice and shiney, the words whiskey jamboree come to mind, and using copper as a detail seems good. But I do not have much of an idea as to how Im going to implement it into the build.

I believe I will eventually be moving my p67 2500k build over onto this test bench and putting under water as I gather more information and see where the building takes me.

Here is a crudely/quickly done version of what I may use as the lay out for the bottom part of the bench. The open area you see to the right goes all the way through will be (hopefully) where im going to put a radiator though Im not fully certain i would be able to fit res/pump/rad into such a small aread, Im going to mess around with this further tomorrow and see if there is a better way to orientate things. If anyone has any suggestions feel free to throw them my way. smile.gif

Alrite. Still semi crude, but I took a little more time to go ahead and find some decent looking parts (not my specific parts, but ones similar in size to show scale)
This is ideally what I want to accomplish by June/July of this year. If you see anything extremely wrong with the way that the water would flow in this set up, please let me know in this thread or p.m. the sooner I know the better.

I'm going to go ahead and make another one to show what I will be able to do first off before I even begin to start ordering any water parts.

Alrite, Kudos to those of you who use handsaws to cut through metal sheets.

This is my attempt first at cutting through with a handsaw, and then trying to drill holes to make it a little easier to use a hand saw. This is for the birds. Im going to try and make it into the shop today or tomorrow and just use an angle grinder to hack through this until I have my basic shape. I'll edit this post to not over do it with too many images for the thread to show what it looks like after I have it cut to rough shape, before sanding and deburring(sp).

I also have a couple questions. Maybe someone can share some personal insight.

I have read through many post about jb weld, and I am having a hard time coming to a general agreement as to what I should be using. I would like to pop the rivets on a few parts on the back of this pci/io sheild and use jb weld I place of the rivets as it will give a much smoother finished appearance when finished. Could someone shed some light on that or am I barking up the wrong tree when I am trying to replace rivets with jbweld?

And for a second question, which is somewhat relatable to the first.

There are plenty of gaps that are easily visible that I see no issue with filling and sanding, to also give a much smoother appearance. Now, for the question, would it be easier to use bondo, or is this something a different type of jbweld would be more suitable for, or even something that whichever version I use for above would be also suitable for using elsewhere on the build.

Today I got to the shop.

I did some rough cuts to start to get the shape and cut away the excess on the pci/io shield. Removed a majority of the paint, and scuffed up the rest. Heres pictures of the front and back.

Here is a very rough version of the shape of the actual "case" compartment. Nothing is actually plumb, and the edges are way crooked, it was getting late and my love was waiting for me so i just cut a general shape so I could accomplish something today.
006af.jpg
By jesusboots at 2012-01-16

And here it is with the mobo tray and the back shield kind of just leaning up to give an idea of the general size and what it might look like finished. The purple dot is where I anticipate further down the line i will have the water come from the radiator to the gpu, and the green one is where it will go from the cpu to the reservoir.

I ended up going ahead and buying J.B. KWIK and tried a little bit out on the top of the sheild. Not enough as I was not sure how far it was going to spread. Ill post pictures when I am further along with the J.B and am starting to get it sanded. Tomorrow I will be attempting to figure out how I am going to get the mobo tray safely mounted with the shield in the proper place.

Any comments, suggestions, cheers, jeers gladly welcomed smile.gif

Small update.

I was at the shop again today, I could have sworn I had taken more pictures, but apparently not.
I ended up using new boards completely for the top and bottom. Then after using a cut off wheel made for metal, and only when i was already done with what I was cutting did I find a jig saw. rolleyes.gif

I suppose in the end it will not matter much, as all of this board will end up completely covered but the mobo tray any how.

and this other picture shows a really poorly done in between coats, with rusto hammered titanium color (I believe, I didnt look at the label)
021al.jpg
By jesusboots at 2012-01-25

I also had the opportunity to make some mobo tray stand-off's and line everything up with the pci/io sheild, that I thought I had taken a picture of. In the next couple of days Im going to reassmble everything, with a mobo, and psu on the case itself to show a slightly closer to finished product.

I also plan to do a matte seal finish too this, not certain fully yet if I am going to use any stain at all or not.

Question. There are plenty of points on thie build, that are going to have a wood to wood connection. I was considering buying some of that gasket in a tube, and using that between the bonds where the wood comes together. Does anyone have experience with that? Or is some sort of mylar/rubber going to be a much safer bet?

Not sure I follow with the glue idea, but just use ordinary PVA wood glue,

The idea was a supposed plan to help with vibration as my hopes for this are aiming to be a quiet build when done.

I don't think I explained it properly.

There is a liquid gasket maker used in automotive. Its something you set while still wet, and it drys over time. Its a composite that is rubber like, I was considering using it between all the bonds of wood, which is just 8 points.

Im not looking to make sure the bonds stay bonded, I'm looking to make the bonds as quiet as possible and I had figured making the entire build one solid piece would make the reverberation louder as opposed to separating everything with grommets and/or other materials.
