Overclock failing

Thread Starter

The thread revival! Go to page 5 post 44 for the latest info!

So here's the story: Yesterday my computer randomly shut off while folding. I rebooted and kept folding. About 10 min later it did the same thing. I set the CPU to stock clocks and it was working fine. I've never OC'd before and I followed the exact steps in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WMZoWOpry40, but I turned off speedstep.

Well after folding 24/7 for 4 days I assumed it was stable, but apparently not. So about an hour ago I did the OC again but with voltages up to 1.38 instead of 1.35. It passed 40 runs of IBT and 2 hours of P95 Small FFTs. 3 hours after I started folding again, it rebooted. So I put it up to 1.39 and during a 100 run IBT test, it failed and shut down once again.. What am I doing wrong? BTW temps never rose above 56c.

Have you checked your dump logs? What codes are you getting when you BSOD/crash?

it is just shutting down right?

The PC will shut off for a moment and then restart.

No codes, just power off.

well i don't think it's an unstable overclock because of the amount of time it runs before failure....check ventilation to psu see if you can allow it to run cooler somehow...

the only other guess would be ram....again could be a heat related instability

easy enough to see if it's psu ...just remove it from case where it would run cooler and see if problem goes away

The ram is icy cold, I have 2 140mms blowing down on it and the mosfets. The PSU was upside down in a case that has no fan grill at the bottom because the cables wouldn't reach otherwise. It was about 1cm off the floor of the case, but not much. I now have it in an awkward ghetto position where they do reach. I'll repost here if there's an issue.

PSU was cold and well ventilated, it failed on the 54th test out of 100 on IBT.

Like mrinnocent said it could be the RAM, I've had simlar problems in the past and it always turns out to be the RAM.
