A8 3870? or - Page 2

Hybrid Crossfire is only really useful if you have an HD6570 or HD6670 DDR3/GDDR3 and even then works only with DX11 games.

I suspect the HD6550D and HD6450 might even work out slower in a number of games. Hence,I would save the money and not include it.

From PCCG it works out cheaper and better gaming value with the A8 3870k + 6450, which will play most games at some sort of play ability.
Where is the 5750 cheaper? I can't find it anywhere that cheap.
MSY don't stock them, PCCG is above and MWave is dearer then PCCG.

The IGP on the 3870K will destroy and shatter to pieces the HD6450.

If you really want something that will kick some arse, get a HD6670. Crossfired with the IGP it will perform at the level of a HD6850-6870.

6850/6870 is a bit of stretch. Do you have any benchmark that can back this up? I am thinking more of a 6770 level. Maybe when you crossfire 2x 6670.

EDIT:
Found a benchmark comparing 6690D2 (A8-3850 CF w/6670) against 6770 using the same CPU. It is virtually the same performance.
http://www.rage3d.com/reviews/video/sapphire_hd6670_ultimate/index.php?p=4

So 6690D2 does NOT have the level of 6850/6870.

A8-3870 uses the same iGPU (6550D) as A8-3850.

What retailer are you using and what parts have you chosen??

A Core i3 2100 and an HD5570 GDDR3 should just about edge an A8-3850 or A8-3870 at stock clockspeeds. The HD6550D IGP is about comparable to an HD5550 GDDR5.

However,UK prices for AMD stuff must be comparatively lower, as a Core i3 2100 based build is barely £10 to £15 cheaper without a dedicated card when compared to an A8-3850 or A8-3870K.

If you haven't decided on anything yet, Guru3D just released their 3870K review today. Its a nice write-up, but I wish they had gone into a little more detail on the iGPU performance and how it compares to lower-end discrete GPUs.

http://www.guru3d.com/article/amd-a8-3870k-review/1

From what I've seen, I think we can safely assume that the on-die 6550D has GPU performance somewhere between the 6450 and the 6570, probably a little closer to the 6570.

6450 - 160 stream processors @ 650MHz
6550D - 400 stream processors @ 600MHz
6570 - 480 stream processors @ 650MHz

5570 - 400 stream processors @ 650MHz
5750 - 720 stream processors @ 700MHz

Going from these numbers alone, I would say the 6550D would perform a little below 5570. Meanwhile, the CPU on the i3 is a bit stronger than that on the 3870K.

So, in summary, if you can get an i3-2100 + 5750 for less than the 3870K, it'll be better value, as it will perform better. smile.gif

HD5570 is about 20-30% faster than 6550D

Good find! thumb.gif One thing I forgot to mention in my somewhat naive look is that the iGPU on the A8 has to use the system ram for its frame buffer, so that will slow things down a bit.

A little more info on purchasing an AMD A8 build, make sure to always get the 75 boards, the 55s don't have all the niceties and future-proofing the 75 chipset has. Also, when using the AMD Fusion, you do not want to put memory below 1600, (preferably 1800) into the system, it will severely bottleneck your processor and especially the IGP. On most motherboards you will have to go into the BIOS and change the frequency of the memory up to the speed you want it at, they are mostly preset at 1024 Mhz (maybe not exact number). The CL doesn't make a tremendous impact on the speed, but increasing the bus will increase your gaming performance over increasing the CPU clock. Stock cooling, the A8 3850s and 3870s OC to an average between 3.5 and 3.8 Ghz, and have seen the IGP OCed to 960+Mhz (that's 60%+ increased performance).

Hope this information helped your decision or at least increased your knowledge on the fusion systems. I would imagine this socket is going to be seeing some pretty powerful gaming processors in the next few quarters.

Socket FM1 will be dead once Trinity is released. Trinity will be using Socket FM2 and it is not compatible on Socket FM1.
