Exactly... This move isnt going to hurt microsoft, they are going to have the exact same piracy problems as before but instead of making 7 different disks they can just make one. Do you think that this will stop pirates from putting ultimate up on torrents. Of course not!

Still I am kind of surprised by this move by Microsoft

Actually, unless they found a new way to "validate" the install, they will have no choice but to allow updates to all systems. They tried to withhold update ability unless you validated your OS a while ago, and they were sued and lost. Basically, they can not determine if your OS is legit unless you register, and validate it.....register requires you giving them your private information (name, address, ect).......it is illegal for them to require you to provide this information just to use their product, which you pay for.

The compromise is that MS is only required to supply security updates for all (otherwise they would just release buggy, well, buggy-er, crap and then you would have to give that information out anyway to get a working copy) however, the performance enhancments and upgrades like WMP 11 and IE 7 can only be obtained by validating.......

I think MS is just looking at the possible upgrades since it would be easier......plus the reduction in cost to packaging and shipping....easier for stores as well, they don't have to decide how many of which copy to carry and then be out of stock if they are wrong. The only trouble is those people that run Basic for a year, and then want to upgrade to ultimate and can't find their disc

As I have said before, you will never stop piracy.......anything a human can lock, a human can unlock........better to spend your energy to making a product worth buying and distributing it easily.

There has to be SOME catch to this..... Otherwise, why not just sell one version for the high price? Instead, now everyone's going to buy the cheapest version and unlock the Ultimate. I doubt MS is that oblivious...

If this is true, MS is just asking to be haxed- I am in no way advocating hax, just the real-world fact that it will indeed be haxed if they go through with this.

And besides, do you honestly think you can fit 8 different Vista installs on 1 4.7GB DVD? Unless they have "upgrade" .exe's that have "Add-on" files in them.

They did the exact same thing on the betas.

And Burn, it's 4.7GB/layer. Total is about 9GB. You can fit all versions of Win2003 (where the code came from) multiple times on a 9GB DVD.

Ah- So in order to, according to this article, install any Vista, we need dual-layer DVD readers? Not cool.

You won't need a full 4.7 GB per version of Windows by half. All versions are still Vista, just some come with more features/eye candy. Eye candy only takes up so much space.

This is begging to be cracked.

And yes, since the base code is certainly the same, it's not 7 copies of an OS, it's the basic, with additions/alterations on different directories on the disc.
