Replacing cpu, motherboard and RAM

Thread Starter
Hey, so i want to upgrade my CPU, Motherboard and Ram from a dual core 64 x2 6400+, asus mobo and corsair dominator gt ddr2 1066 4gb ram to a quad core am3+ cpu and compatible mobo with ddr3 ram, i want to keep everything else in my computer, what do i have to do once i recive my new parts to go about selling my old parts? like whipe everything clean of my info or w/e also would like to sell a old geforce 8800 gs with old parts, any help would be greatly appreciated, i would also like to use the same hdd and o.s system (win7 64bit, have cd key and install disk still)

None of those listed parts will save any information except maybe the CMOS on the motherboard so you can sell them without fear. You can re-use everything else though without any trouble. The only issue you may have is the windows 7 disk. Is it an OEM disk or retail? If it's OEM you technically can't use it with a new motherboard. There are ways around this but doesn't make it legal, even if you get it to work.

thats just the operating system.
Keep it or sell it with the key.
( you need the key to install it in the first place)

so selling them separate would not make any sense.

You can sell the GTX without any problems.

Just make sure you wipe/clear your hard drive if you are selling it.

If you want to be super duper careful wipe your Memory (ram)
which doesn't really matter since, when its plugged into another computer its wiped anyways.

The hard drive is the most important aspect of DATA though.

you can sell anything else no problem though.

OEM means it's locked to the motherboard you had it installed on. So legally you can't just sell it unless it goes with the motherboard. You also legally can't re-use it on the new parts because as above, it's locked to the old motherboard.

ok, tadean let me see if i got this straight, so what your saying(from what i gathered from your post and kyismaster).. Since i want to sell my old motherboard, cpu, and ram (not seelin my gtx, i had a old 8800gs that i was gonna throw in with those) i would basically have to let the win7 go with them? and then when i upgrade those part's, i'm gonna have to buy a new o.s aswell?
what tadaen just said rolleyes.gif explains it perfectly how OEM works.

if you bought it seperately, it woulda been yours to keep.

AMD athlon 64 x2 6400+ runnin at 3.5 GHz thanks to a OC program through the BIOS http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103228
Asus M3N-HT deluxe motherboard http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131343
Corsair dominator GT DDR2 4GB 1066 ram http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145270
Evga Geforce 8800 gs http://www.evga.com/articles/388.asp
Zalman CPU heatsink (might as well since the cpu is goin with no cooler) http://ncix.com/products/?sku=21340&vpn=CNPS9700LED&manufacture=ZALMAN%20TECH
Win 7 ultimate 64bit.

that's what i'm replacing, now since my copy of window's would be usless to me if i kept it, should i let me hdd go aswell or what should i go about doing when i get a new o.s like whipe my hdd and do a clean install of a new win7 os? or just delete win7 off my current hdd and re-install the new copy? keep in mind i'm workin on a sad budget of hopfully less then $500 since im about to start university student prices here for classes are gay, this is the cpu i wish to upgrade (sorry if i repost this link ican remember if i did it already or not)
http://ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=64407
And after what kiysmaster? ha sorry! said a few post's above me, is to get a more sturdy motherboard that would last the same amount of year's as the cpu above.
http://ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=61850
Ram i can look around and figure out what would work best, i was looking at some ripjaw's from g.skill that im quite happy with, plus its a 8gb kit for under $50

But now, here's where ima almost break my budget point since just the mobo and cpu are a **** hair under $300, what kind of O.S should i go about buying? im a gamer, i use photoshop and aftereffects quite regularly, plus im taking graphic design classes so im lookin for something with a bang for the buck kinda deal, or even just something i can throw on there for the time being till im able to go about gettin win7 ultimate 64bit again.

Don't let go of your HDD. lol, its all good, just your MOBO and OS have to go together, everything else can go separate.

well your core is $128.67
your mobo shouldn't need to be over $150
your ram should be ~34.99 - 50
So ram+ mobo + cpu should easily be under 300. lol

Your power supply should be ~60 + if you don't have one.

just get windows 7 home edition: 99 dollars.

thats all you need. not ultimate, not professional, but HOME edition.

tongue.gif

Or you could hunt some one down on OCN that has a legit copy of windows 7 that might sell it to you for cheaper.

anyways, if your looking for advice to buy a AMD, ask another person,

Im Intel all the way, after AMD made its golden age back around AMD +3200, then died since then, i turned into a intel man. tongue.gif
