About to buy the t3i

Thread Starter
Hi,
I'm about to buy my first SLR and I picked the Canon t3i since I'm focusing more on video making and obviously get some nice pictures along the way.

I'm going to be ordering the t3i off:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/USA-Model-Canon-EOS-Rebel-T3i-600D-18-MP-CMOS-Digital-SLR-Camera-Body-5169B003-/140657101423?pt=Digital_Cameras&hash=item20bfd10a6f

My question is if this lens is suited for what I'm doing? This is going to be my first lens, but I rather do it right right off the bat, but I'd prefer not spending any more than 600 on the lens.

Here's the lens I'm looking at getting:

That is a quality lens, although I wouldn't recommend it for videos. The VC version actually has worse IQ than the non-VC version. Furthermore, that lens doesn't have have full time manual control. If you are only going to use manual focus for video, then it's fine. The VC issue depends on if you have steady hands or shoot with a tripod a lot. For $600 you can't do much better.

Do you think I should be looking at a 50mm Prime instead?

If you buy the 50 then you have less to buy a lens to do everything else with. Some people will say you should just invest in one prime right now and only use that but I don't subscribe to that. The Tamron 17-50 is probably your best bet. I don't know of any other lens around your price point that is in that focal range and offers 2.8. With that said, I return to the question of VC or not. That is up to you.

i would have to agree with hangman. a single prime is more difficult to use when you are first starting out. But if you really want a prime, then the sigma 30/1.8 is probably your best bet.

Isn't the Sigma 1.4?

I got one, I'm no pro, maybe I haven't figured it out yet, but it doesn't seem to have auto focus in video mode.

You're correct, it doesn't AF in video mode. MF isn't too hard though with a decent lens.

nicckay I would try and get the non-VC version of that Tamron lens because it is optically superior. Alternatively I would also look into the Sigma 17-50 2.8 which has gotten some raving reviews.
