Gigabyte MA770T-UD3P strange DRAM Voltage setting? 1.6V is the minimum

Hey all, I'm finally preparing to do a bit of OCing so I've been nosing around in the BIOS getting familiarized with all the settings. And I found something that seems a bit strange to this amateur.

Both my motherboard and RAM are rated at and/or support 1.5V. However the auto voltage setting is 1.6V (according to the BIOS, HWMonitor and OCCT) and if I were to manually set the voltage the minimum I can set it to is also 1.6V (and up to 2.4V). Like I said this seems a bit strange to me so can anyone shed some light on this? And is it anything to be concerned about?

my best guess is its a 770 chipset, so its pretty old board. back when it was released and bios's had matured 1.5v ram wasnt around. its only since the release of sandybridge that 1.5v ram has really started to make its appearance. either way Gigabyte have seemed to believe there is no use for lower DRAM voltage.

btw even though your kit is rated for 1.5v it is still fine to run at 1.65v like most DDR3 ram

That's a BIOS limitation widespread among Gigabyte 700 series chipset boards.  My GA-990XA-UD3 had this limitation.  However, 1.6V isn't going to cause any particularly horrid damage to a 1.5V kit.  In fact DRAM kits must be able to maintain up to 1.9V tolerance (not necessarily long term) to even pass on through to the market.

Thanks both of you for the information. I wasn't exactly worried but it's nice to have some extra peace of mind. thumb.gif
