WD 3tb green drive friendly raid card?

Thread Starter
I've been thinking of rebuilding my server. It's currently running version 1 of Windows Home Server. I would like to install Windows 7 instead so I can throw a few Ceton TV tuner cards in it, use the Xbox as a media extender, and get rid of the cable box. Only issue is if I get rid of WHS, I get rid of Driver Extender. I currently have a bunch of 2tb green drives in there with the jumpers set to disable the 4k sector thing. Eventually I would like to make the move to 3tb drives though and don't want to have to change hardware when I do. I'm hoping someone could recommend me a reliable raid card that won't have issues with 3tb or larger Western Digital green drives?

The issue with using off the shelf WD green drives with a hardware raid card is that the drives don't have error recovery control capabilities (referred to WD as time-limited error recovery). I know this can lead to issues (such as drives dropping out of the array) but I have never done it myself so I can't speak from experience.

Hmmm... Thanks. Maybe I should just use the software raid option in Windows 7? Anyone have experience using that?

I have a mixture of drives in my home server, all of the 'green' variations (WD, Hitatchi). I've been using Flexraid (free software) which mimics the WHS drive extender feature while giving you a software raid solution. I'm running it under Win 7.

It wasn't super complicated to install and was easy enough to use if you are willing to read their forums to understand all the features (it's not super well documented). Once you get it installed the UI is super intuitive and easy to use.

No issues for 6 months, you get all the features of the drive extender bit in WHS, and if you choose you can use the software RAID features included. Oh, and you can mix and match drive sizes without loosing the RAID features nor loosing the extra space on the larger drives.
