Most likely Vram limitations rather than GPU that tends to be the biggest killer from going AA/AF

in landscape that's the way to go in portrait, due to where all the electrical s are you need to put the centre one at the back. Obviously if your bezel modding then you need to look at how big a gap the panels will give you and decide whether not having them flat is worth the few extra mm that will be a very subjective choice.

Pioneer,

How funny, I purchased the exact same setup and have had the monitors for about 8 days so far. I, love them.

Here are my thoughts.

Portrait-super impressive! Haven't had a agame that couldn't run in portrait mode. All menus visible without being zoomed in or cut off. You don't have HUD stretch issues. Bezels are not in issue to me during normal gameplay. It is much different than watching youtube clips of people's setups. Since your in control it is a different story. You have to try it to understand. Ps. With a simple gui mod you can get Skyrim to run beautifully in portrait with no menu cut off.

The big con is that the bezels will cut directly through ingame menus such as inventory and dialog boxes. This can render a game unplayable if you use bezel correction as text will be hidden behind the bezel. Turning bezel correction off will allow you to see all the text but then your lines between screens do not match up. Borderland is an issue in portrait because the bezel cuts off the text on the weapon stats menu screen.

Landscape-great peripherals! Landscape works with many games and when it does it is great! Bezels aren't a problem at all even with bezel correction and ingame menus are perfect. The negatives are that because of the very different aspects ratio some games really have problems and require a lot of ini tweaks or hacks. The worst offender I have found in my short research is fallout new Vegas. With landscape hud stretch is an issue and fov settings matter more. For games that have tweaks for these it works great but when there isn't it can be a pain. Also there is the fisheye effect that happens wit landscape. This is a nonissue during normal gameplay but is jarring when stopped and looking at the image across all screens. Things n the side monitors appear zoomed in and stretched. This does not bother me at all since you aren't focused on the sidescreens during play.

All in all I love the setup and I am so glad I went with the dell ips panels. Having the ability to switch up portrait to landscape without being stuck to one is huge.

I would not mod your monitors until you experience both setups for yourself with the games you like to play.

Also make sure you check out widescreengamingforum's extensive game database to for the games you like to play and the tweaks to get them to run.

For AA performance VRAM isn't an issue with 7970 since there's a lot of it. The problem is only 32 ROPs that handle AA, the same amount as in Cayman. They did improve the efficiency though, but I still think AA performance is the weak spot of Tahiti.

Has anyone bezel modded the Dell U2XXX IPS Panels? I'm sure most of them are similar in bezel design and I'm really thinking about doing mine.

depends on the textures new games are coming out with bigger and bigger textures, the 7970 is 3gb which really isn't all that much more than the 2gb on my 6970's and my 5870 e6s before that both of which could be easily vram capped using AA/AF in certain games. Unfortunately ATI still dont let us see in diagnostics how much Vram is in use >< but I know how it feels from experiencing it on my old house-mates 580 surround set-up.

It could be that the extra Gb is enough and certainly there could be more too it (and most likely is) but in almost all games and all multi-monitor set-ups I've played with AA and AF are the FPS killers. dropping to 2/4x and having a few little jaggies never killed anyone though the result is well worth the small sacrifice.

Okay, so how bad...honestly, is portrait mode, when in game for the menu's? I was watching a ton of videos, and it didn't look like it would be all that horrible, especially if I offset the monitors so I've only got one monitor worth of bezel.

I don't really want to spend $700 worth of monitors, only to find out that I can't use them. 23's in landscape is too small, so I will NOT be using them in landscape mode.

It bothers different people more than others personally I never used bezel correction as I prefered to have the full picture even if it damaged the imersion somewhat.

no one can tell you "how bad" it is some people love it and would never go back other switch to using a single large screen, honestly I myself having been forced to return to a single screen would say there are many things i miss about it (and i would go back in a heartbeat) but one of them is not all the fiddling it sometimes takes to make a game work tongue.gif

Basicaly what im saying is YMMV worst case I guess distance seller regs will be your only freind and you have 30 days (or whatever it is in your country) to ship them back and swallow the carriage costs. but most likely you will be very happy with it.

It definitely is not all that horrible. Ifu ttuturn off bezel correction the menu's work and simply look a little strange with the bezels intersecting the words but they are definitely usable. This is not a deal breaker especially once you see how amazing a game in portrait actually looks. You will wonder why you waited so long to do it.

As for offsetting the monitors to reduce the bezels is sounds great on paper but in reality it doesn't work in portrait. In landscape it works well since you really have one main screen with two complimentary side screens. In portrait you have one giant screen. When the main screen is offset from the sides the overall image looks very strange. Try this for yourself and you will see what I mean.

I love my eyefinity setup with my dell U2312hm monitors and I will never go back to a single screen. Oh and two more things ... Hydragrid rocks and alphacoders. Com is a great site for wallpapers for portrait as it automatically reads your resolution and has a bit in cropping tool.

Please let me know what your impressions are once you setup everything. Post in this thread or send me a PM anytime. I'm happy to help!

Oh one last thing. The monitors do no come with DisplayPort cables. Monoprice.com is a great place to order mini-dp to dp cables for cheap money. I ordered one and it came in in a few days. It was definitely under $10 total for a six footer.

There's improvement in Eyefinity 2.0 for the 79xx series.
