I need some help with a Pentium build

Thread Starter
this is my first pentium build and so far no good, i keep getting random restarts. sometimes it will happen under a graphics load and then other times just for no reason at all. ive changed the psu and the graphics card to no avail. does anyone have any ideas on what else i should check?

Did you replace one no-name PSU with another? I still suspect the PSU. Can you give us the specs of both PSUs?

Also, do you run stock, or did you already overclock that rig?

well the psu i took out was a cheapy one as i bought the case for 60 dollars, but the one i replaced it with came out of my aspire x-navigator in which i had fully loaded with a raptor,7800gs,5 case fans, and a watercooling kit so im not thinking its the psu but ill see if i can get the specs on it. its at stock speeds and ive already put a 100% load on both cores for 12 hrs and ran memtest on it for a few hrs and nothing happened so i dont think its a heat problem. it mostly happens when im on firefox just looking at sites

ok heres the specs off of the psu in it right now
+3.3=28a 5=30a 12=34a
-5=.3a 12=.8a +5vsb=2.0a
watts for 3.3 and 5=200 watts
watts for 3.3,5,12=480 watts
total watts 500

Ok, so at the moment we basically can rule out:
- PSU (that one should do it, and it's proven in another rig)
- RAM (memtest)
- Video (you tried different cards)

Probably ok, but not 100% sure:
- CPU (ran heavy load for 12 hours - was that Prime?)

Did you do a complete new install of Windows for this build? Do you do anything specific in Firefox? Or just random browsing?

does the GPU get good ventilation? Generally I would expect a freeze but a reboot might be the issue. It'll be odd if two different GPUs overheat in that rig though.

On the more remote things: there is nothing that might cause a short grounding or something like that, like a cable that's maybe bare and touches something briefly? I know, remote...

it wasnt prime but another program something with burn in the name but i watched speedfan and seen that both cores were at 100%, it seems to do it most with web pages that have alot of pictures on it so im thinking graphics related but it even does it with the onboard graphics so im stumped. its a fresh install and i cant see anything groundin out at all. my temp on the cpu under load is only 38 degrees c, could that by chance have anything to do with it cuz i read somewhere that p4s are hot but i dunno

If your CPU's go up to 100% from just web browsing methinks you have a bit of a virus/spyware problem. There is NO WAY that should load your system

I recommend AVG Free and ewido for the spyware

Some P4's run hot yet, but I believe the D9xx series are a bit cooler, esp, with good cooling. I don't know what cooling you have. I assume the program you use to put a load on the cores does test the CPU thoroughly. I would try prime95, just for the heck of it... see if any core fails.

Other than that, the thing that comes to mind is drivers. You seem to have tried several cards and onboard now. I am not sure which driver you used initially, but maybe that install did not go right, and the problems that arose with that never were fully fixed when using subsequent drivers.

I'd try to completely clean out the drivers, using drivercleaner pro. Remove any and all drivers from the cards you used (either ATI or nVidia) and go from there.

Another possibility is some sort of odd conflict with components... maybe a PCI card or so that tries to access the same IRQ or memory address as your video does?

OTherwise, I am not sure...

Your onboard graphics are probably interfering. Make sure any relics of it are remved.
