Imagine if AMD called their current series 8xxx instead of 7xxx (for whatever reason), would the 8970 be any different than the current 7970?
Ofc not, it would be the same thing just with a different branding..
After all, it's still speculation about the next gen being called 6xx or 7xx, no one knows for sure and different sources say either.
It's not just an issue of naming. 6xx series could be something other than kepler, a fermi die shrink perhaps.
All the recent news posts in the past few weeks were simply relying to one simple Roadmap
that nVidia showed 2 years ago at the GTC 2010.
Report sites and reviewers were drawing conclusions early and entitling the upcoming series (whether it be 6xx or 7xx) as Kepler eventhough its not even sure if it truly is Kepler (plans and roadmaps can always change). So it's not sure if 7xx even is Kepler nor if 6xx is anything different than 7xx (it simply seems to be an uncentainity about the naming).Edited by toX0rz - 1/17/12 at 1:26am
