Gaming Rig using Core i3 = Good/Bad? - Page 2

Thank you so much to everyone who has responded, +REP to the useful ones thumb.gif.

My first build used a Core2Duo e6400 (that super sweet overclocking chip? Couldn't do a thing with it mad.gif) with an Asus P5B Deluxe (P965 chipset) and 2gb kit of DDR2 800Mhz.
I thought this was the shizzle and that overclocking would be a dream come true. Neither of which came true.

I switched out the e6400 for a Core2Quad Q8400 chip in Feb '11, saw a 20% jump in all games/benchmarks (I'm sorry about that bottleneck, HD 4870). The HD 4870 I bought after having a 7900GT(GT?) for 2 years.

@Schmuckley
Can I OC an i3? It does not have a 'K' edition...

@gerickjohn
I've seen 2 friend's PCs both with and i3 and 550Ti playing skyrim at max on 1280x1024 and near max on 1900x1080, I doubt it would be that way at higher resolutions but I do not mind as 1900x1080 is fine for me.

@Narmour
I am bulding the rig piece by piece but still want to lock the budget so I can move on with my life financially rolleyes.gif.

@Ironman517
I thought long and hard about it and honestly, i'm going straight for a bootable SSD and essentially cutting out the caching middle man. I plan on an AData S511 120Gb drive (measured to be as fast as a vertex and I think it also uses the same SForce controller, came highly recommended from some reputable reviews) and then a simple major storage drive as a secondary. Alternatively a Patriot Pyro 120gb, depending on availability in my country (if I could get a Samsung 830, I would mad.gif).

So yeah, I think I am going to go with the i3 2120 and GTX 560Ti. I have a GEN3 Motherboard planned for the rig so yeah, Ivy Bridge upgrade sometime is the plan biggrin.gif.
Thanks again everyone for giving me another 10 hours of research to do tongue.gif. It's all good though, I want to know everything I can about what I am building.

I know a highly recommended, if not the most recommended, SSD on OCN is the Cruical M4. But, I have heard great things about the Samsung 830 as well, kinda wish I had one tongue.gif You can always talk to Sean, he knows a lot about SSDs and make sure you read over his guide before installing your SSD as well.

The i3 + 560Ti is an excellent combo. I did a build for a friend, who mainly wanted to play wow, with a 460 and an i3-2100 and he loves it. It plays wow at max and he cannot see any fps issues tongue.gif It is a great little budget CPU, it does wonders. Only if it were OCable... rolleyes.gif

GEN3 board is a great choice too thumb.gif

You cant really oc the non-k chips, 50mhz would be a big oc already.
2120+560ti will be a great combo for 1080p, it's a lot faster gpu than 550ti.

The Adata ssd will likely serve you well, the samsung 830 or crucial m4 would be "better" but they are more expensive too. I'll likely run two Chronos or petrol drives in the next build.

@Ironman517
I have Sean's installation guide bookmarked already.

@Blizlake
I suspected the i3 would not be OC friendly. No worries, I can wait before I try my hand at overclocking again... 'Petrol' drive?!

I would get a Crucial M4 or a Samsung 830 if I could source them in South Africa... also they will most likely be insanely expensive frown.gif Hence the AData choice smile.gif.

Thanks again for the assistance.

i3-2100 is good for most games, i3-2120 would be considerably better in a few games.

Also you're not really saving yourself that much by dropping from a 2500k to an i3, as the 2500k resale value would be much better.

@OP it also depends what games you play, Civ / Skyrim / BF3 will eat up an i3.

Petrol drive = OCZ petrol. Not as fast as the others suggested but cheap.

@owned civ/skyrim/bf3 will be just fine on i3-2120. And I too would buy i3 now and 3570k when it's released.

Civ and Skyrim are on my games list, BF3... nope. Not even going to bother with that or MW3 biggrin.gif.
The i3 is about 33% cheaper than an i5 here in RSA, also reselling is not an easy practice in this country (at least not that I am aware of).

Negating any reselling of the CPU (I will never find a buyer for my e6400), the upgrade from the i3 to an Ivy based CPU sounds like a legit route to me.

Again, thanks for the opinions, +REP to you.

The i3 2100 is 2c/4t.

The i3 2100 is a good CPU to have to hold out until Ivy Bridge, or even just to save money until you can afford an i5 or i7, or Xeon.
