If I can setup a raid array on each sad port I think I should be ok without the raid card.

I would consider having all the drives on the board and use something like a OCZ Revodrive 3 X2, the thing as a sick transfere speed.
You could also use PCI-ex extenders and mount a raid card somewhere else, but not sure how many lanes the SR-3 has.

i believe it is 2 drives per sas, and it has at least 80 because of the SB-E arcitecture... if i had to guess OP will wait for it to come out to decide fully... IMO it would be amazing to run all lanes at x8... can u say quad fire + massive RAID + 3 Revo 3 x2s? devil.gif

That is beyond my knowledge, but i'm sure someone here could clear that out.

Is that something limited to the board? I've got a couple of SAS controllers here and they are all 4 drives per SAS.

we wont know for sure until the board comes out, but i would asume yes... all the native sata ports should raid together, and the 3rd party chips tend to have raid within them selves (no mixing the two without nasty software)

I wasn't planning on mixing the RAID drives between the different controllers. If I can use 4 drives per SAS, that would be great.

I am still waiting for the case. Case Labs had a delay in getting some of the parts for the case. Not like I have time right now for a new build. I am trying to get all of my end of the year paperwork and bills done, to send off to my accountant. frown.gif

Yea, it looks what i can see to be SFF-8086 / 7, it supports up to 4 devices pr breakout cable:
SAS

Would wait to release to know for sure.
yes, it's 4 sata/sas connections per 8087 port. It's simply 4 sas/stata lanes bundled into one port. Very nice for enterprise storage connections. Use a breakout cable to connect your drives (be careful not to accidentally get a reverse breakout cable).
Since TRIM isn't supported on the card you lsited, I'd personally go with the ARC-1882. I've dealt with the first gen series, and they are blazing fast. The new one is a dual core LSI chip. I'd set up RAID5 or 6 with your SSD's - the controller will be plenty fast enough to handle it about as fast as RAID0, and will give you a little fault tolerance. (Get the 4G cache and a battery backup unit). 22 disk RAID60 w/ 2TB WD RE4's (4G cache module): 1,239MB/sec read, 1,000MB/S write. Love this card.

ASG, I just received my TH10 earlier this week. I'm looking to do a similar workstation-oriented build with the SR-3 + Xeons and a 580, (yet with less expensive auxiliary components wink.gif) I'm looking forward to some pictures in your build log, Aquacomputer makes some beautiful gear.
Keep us posted.

bitcore, let me know if you do a build log.

I was planning on setting up the ssd drives on the board and running the storage drives off the sas and RAID card.

I'm still waiting for the case. I was told the should be shipping it out next week.

I was finally able to get through to MDPC-X and order some more sleeving. smile.gif Nils' new store hours change from day to day. He has a great following and great products.

I am sure I ordered enough for two builds.

Once I start receiving packages, I will start posting pictures.
