Windows install off USB Key? - Page 2

You sure made that clear earlier...
Yeah, you should be able to copy the contents of the CD onto a USB drive, then set the BIOS to boot to your "removable device" You may need to have the USB drive in the PC before you set it in BIOS.

You can't just copy it, there needs to be the boot file too. How do you get the boot file on to a flash drive?

copy and past the file.
Tranfer the file.

it can be done. Otherwise you woudn't be able to copy the disc onto the HDD and then burn it onto a CD.

It can't be done. Windows cannot boot off of USB because of something about danger when the USB thing is refreshed... I'm not exactly sure about the details. I did come across a page once that described how to edit the XP cd by editing an ISO image of the installation disk. I will see if i can find that page.

EDIT: I think this is it:

He is not talking about booting the actual os from the usb drive. He is talking about launching the os installation from the usb drive which CAN be done as long as ur bios supports booting from the removable drive.(which most newer boards do) Nasgul is right, just mount the iso of ur os(or put the disk in ur optical drive), and just copy ALL of the files onto the usb drive. Simple as that.

Well' I'll settle this one later on, getting 2gb 120x memstick back.

I'll copy the entire contents of the XP slipstream onto it and try. I still don't understand how it will boot, as I thought you needed a boot sector for the specific version of the disk.

I can use the HP tool to make them bootable as I have one I use for ghosting. That was easy to make because all you need is a '98 bootdisk, which gets its bootsector copied to the start of the usb partition by the HP tool.

There is no "boot disk" other than CD that I know of for XP???

I'll let ya know soon.

ps yeah, I'm NOT trying to get a WIN PE on the stick, but that would also be a cool project too! It's just the modified win install disk so I can get M$ products out there QUICKER!

Well, I know this is possible. My Dad's IT guys can do it. They use 1GB sticks.
(at least he says they can, I will find out how they do it tomorrow, if I can)

Make sure they are installing from and not to the USB stick. If they are really installing from ask how
