Well the time has come. I've been thinking about this ever since my wife and I bought a house. I have several rack mountable servers, switches and even firewalls. I plan on centralizing my network and it's components.

Things to do:
  • Build cabinet, populate it
  • Have electrician add auxiliary breaker box for cabinet
  • Wire in-wall Cat6 Ethernet cable for both phone and network
  • Enjoy my awesome work

I've been playing in Google's Sketchup and finally came up with a design that works for me and my budget.

700

The cabinet will be built from 1/2" MDF and the front rails, where the server screws go, will have some rails made from right angle steel brackets. It's nothing fancy, expensive or crazy. It's simply to get my servers off the wire rack shelf for a decent price. The entire cabinet is 5' tall, to fit into my sub-basement which is 6'. It's 22" deep and of course 19" wide.

I'll update this as the progress moves along.

Nice plans! But I think I would go for something a bit stronger than 1/2 MDF.

5/8 would be too heavy and would almost double the cost.

MDF just doesn't have that much structural integrity over a big span was all I was thinking. Can you get 1/2 in plywood? Or maybe beef it up with some 1x2 runners.

There will be braces inside, not show on the sketchup. 60" Isn't a very long span. It's also back braced and internally braced by the shelf too. I got the idea from a friends cabinet, his is actually taller with less bracing. No issues with his.

EDIT:

Here is an another picture of one I made. This one has braces, but uses 5/8". It's also missing the rear braces. The sketchup was only to give me a visual idea. The actual layout will be braced properly.

Just to let you know but I have 1/2" MDF as my desk and the span is only 48" and it sags a little so the 60" span would probably warp even more frown.gif
