Horizontal =/= Vertical

Plus all the shelves/racks would act as braces too.

Pretty much. Not much sagging is going to occur when it's vertical. Like I said too, this is almost a copy of a friends. His is about 8 years old.

Alright, well the work started today and will be finished tomorrow. We went with 3/4" MDF since it was on sale thumb.gif Huge sale at that. But sadly they messed up the cut at the factory/mill so it's a little askew on the back, I really don't care since it's the back. Here are some, real crappy pictures of the work. My friends garage is poorly light so my cell phone did a crummy job.

Some gear for mock-ups. KVM, Router and server:
398

Boards cut to 5'x2':
398

Top and bottom cut to size:
398

Air nailed and glued, ready for drilling:
398

Here you can see the off-set. Damn Home Depot.
398

Test fit. See the aluminum rails, these will be the front mounts for the gear:
700

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What we did:
  • Cut all boards to length
  • Glued all edges
  • Air nailed everything
  • Drilled pilot holes and counter sink holes
  • Put in wood screws
  • Put braces in the same manner as above
  • Called it quits for the day
For those that are wondering it's strength as MDF. This thing is solid. It's stronger than anything I've ever bought or built.
Things for tomorrow:
  • Inner shelf
  • Feet
  • Server brackets
  • Admiration of work
I love the idea...but why not just get a rack off of craigslist or something? A lot of the time you can get them for next to nothing (-$50-$100)
Sure, maybe in big town USA. Not here. Craigslist barely exists and our alternative is called Kijiji it's run by the folks that own eBay. It's full of peoples small town crap. I don't live in a large populous area. I've see 1 server rack in the past 10 years go up for sale. It was over $1000.
Why bother doing anything? OCN users build their own desks, PCs, servers, mods...you name it. The point is that we enjoy this work. This is what brings us to OCN. Comments like yours are detrimental to the site, we should be encouraging custom builds not belittling them.
Thanks for looking.
Well I didn't finish it today. I need to get to bed because I work tonight. But here are some progress pictures.
This is the middle shelf, after routing:
398
Prepping the whole box for routing:
398
During the routing, looks much cleaner and professional like:
398
The rounded edges, inside and out:
398
After hitting it with the sander:
398
Getting very close. Here is the cabinet with the casters installed. Rolls real smooth.
700
My friend got inside the cabinet and I rolled it around. He's about 230lbs. No issues, no flexing, creaking, nada. It's built like a tank.
We didn't finish today for a few reasons.
  • We added casters, figured it would help when I get it into the basement.
  • We routed! It looks amazing!
  • We're going to paint.
So I figured this will take a little longer, but will make it really stand out....in the basement.
Sorry, wasn't sure where you were located. Back when I lived in a small town we still had a bunch of those things pop up.
Wasn't suggesting not building, just was curious, that's all. I'm all for custom building projects.
Project looks really great so far. Routing and sanding make a world of a difference.
Awesome. Thanks for your feedback.
I agree too, routing and sanding is making this come together. At first it was going to be cheap, and just work. Now it's almost going to look like a piece of store bought furniture.
