Time for a new video card, 460 or 560?

Thread Starter
Hey guys my old video card is shot so I need a new one.
I'm not looking to run games max, they just need to look better than xbox 360 in general.
Tho no garauntees I'd like to run games like GTA 5, hitman absolution, and max payne 3 in the future with no problems.

Right now it's between these two, my mother board is Asus P9x79 Pro, so I'm thinking the asus will respond better.
But with the gigabyte I'd be saving 50 bucks, and I'm not a graphics whore.

**Also, I'd like to have this card pretty much dead silent while not gaming, adjusting it's fan speeds, I'm not sure which one would be better for this.

I would say get the Nvidia GTX560 because even though it is a higher clock GTX 460, you can overclock the 560 way further to get even more performance and it runs significantly cooler than the 460

is there a budget you have in mind? or are you set on the 460/ 560
if those are your only choices i would go with a 560

here are some articles with benchmarks

i got a gigabyte 560 ti for 200 at newegg but its not on sale atm they also had a SOC version for 210$...im sure they will be on sale again soon.

Proof it runs cooler? I'd like to see it, especially since it's the exact same card with higher clocks. Improbable.

However, OP, that is not the 460 GTX you want. That's the "v2" with a 192-bit bus 1GB VRAM model. They're a bit slower than the old school 460s (like mine) in that they have lower memory bandwidth, fewer ROPs, possibly fewer texture units (can't check cause wiki is blacked out, ajdfnlswdjgnla) and lower clocks.

If you buy a 460, make sure it's a 256-bit, 1GB (or 2GB!) v1 model with 32 ROPs. If your choice is between these two cards.. I'd say wait it out until mid-range AMD cards land (next month?). If nothing else, prices on those Fermis will drop.
