That's really interesting, though I'd love to see some "intelligent" organisms.
We don't have too many around nowadays, including myself...

I was going to say this was old news, but I might have read it in local news...

You should look into biofilms...groups of different species of bacteria that live together and each type will do something for the benefit of the colony. There is even evidence of chemical communication, though the complexity of it is still largely debated.

Any ways, it is really common for single celled organisms to work together. It isn't surprising to for them to officially group up due to stimuli.

You make it sound like artificial selection never leads to evolution. It can; it's just that in this case, it's much more likely that the yeast cultures already existed that did what they needed it to do, so those particular cultures were the most fit and started breeding like crazy.

Bottom line: doesn't mean any evolving actually took place.

Of course artificial selection can lead to an evolutionary branch--but in all fairness, centuries of evolution and evolutionary research has been validated via natural selection. All this proves is that you can use artificial selection to map out the evolutionary course of an organism. It doesn't have anything to do with how that organism behaves outside of the experiment. Ergo, timescale comparisons of 60 days vs. something else are meaningless.

It's interesting, but has nothing to do with the evolutionary process to-date dictated by natural selection.

Chemical communication definitely exists. As for the debated complexity, it depends on exactly which organisms/mechanisms we're talking about. Some are better understood than others. V. fisheri and P. aeruginosa use relatively simplistic models but are understood fairly well and offer great insight into inter-cellular chemical communication.

and that's why it's merely a model.

However, this is a good model that shows how it can work in nature. Not saying this is exactly what is done, but an example of how it could have been done.
