5770 Crossfire build, how much do I reeeally need?

Thread Starter
My build has gone from a budget build, to something more serious over the years, so now I have to start worrying about PSU's; but I don't know much about "12 volt rails" and things like that. I hope to make way for a crossfire build in the future but I have no idea what would work best.

Current system:
AMD 1075T 3.0GHz (125W)(usually overclocked to about 3.75)
MSI 990FXA-GD80
XFX 5770
G2 Series 64GB SSD
Seagate 7200 1TB
1 3000RPM fan and 2 other normal 120's
Antec 430W PSU (below 500W minimum for 5770 but it was free)

Running the Kill-A-Watt meter shows that on full load, the system uses 350 Watts.

Anybody have a good idea what is smart for another 5770? I hear very mixed reports as to how much power one actually uses.

What about triple 5770's? (I know this is not always a desired set up but I may want to try it some day).

So does 12 volt rail mean that those are the main cords you should use for gpu's or something?

Thanks all
AMD power!

The answer is probably lees power than you think a good 600 watt can easily crossfire and over clock and might be able to 3x fire
what your looking for as far as power goes on a 12v rail is the sticker on the side. That will tell you what the 12v rail is rated for.

I was running a pair with the same PSU I have now. No issues at all.

Even had them on a super cheap Apevia Iceberg 680w PSU, which was not capable of 680w.

I ran my 5770's of a Cooler Master 600 Watt PSU for the last two years without issue. Trippe Crossfire was terrible on the 57xx series (4 was fun). That's why most 57xx cards only have one X-fire bridge.

I have a 1055t overclocked to 4ghz and 2 5770's sometime running at 1000/1365 1.3v and they never pull more that 460 watts from the wall. In short they do not draw too much power.

Good luck!

Wow that is a lot less power than I had expected, thanks a lot your system would be very similar to mine.

And thanks for the pic robert that helps me understand it better along with some googleing.
