which should I get?

I am going to be getting a xonar DG soundcard. Will it be ok if it is directly underneath my accelero gpu cooler? There will be a very very small amount of clearance.

I am trying to figure out which headphones I should consider getting. I need a pair that has good bass to them since I listen to music and play games. I often listen to music while i am playing games as well.

As of now I am looking at:
Ultrisone pro 550
ATH-M50

I looked into AD700s, a700s, and dt770s but these will just not work out for me. I prefer to buy my things through amazon where I can easily return them. The DT770 do sell on Ebay for about 150 but like I said, I would like to be able to easily return them if i dont like them and amazon sells them for about 200. I would like to spend no more than 150 so the 550s are kind of the most expensive I can buy. I can get the ATH-m50s for 130.

From what I have read the 550s have a soundstage and great bass as well as mids/highs. I have also read that the ATH-M50 do not have a soundstage so they are not super great for gaming.

If I want music and gaming would the pro 550s be best for me? any other options you can think of that I am not seeing?

I'm using the same motherboard as you, so I'm assuming you're going to be using the lower PCI slot for the sound card correct? If that's the case you should be good as it looks like you only have the one 580 and it will give you a slot for space. If you're worried about staving the card for air you could always run an external DAC/Headphone amp like the Fiio E10

As for the cans, I've heard good thing about both the models you are considering. The Pro 550 S are a little more efficient, but with an amp both will probably open up a bit and give you good performance. I'm actually considering the ATH-M50's as my next set to try something a little different from my HD555's.

What is more important...gaming or music?

lol sorry I forgot to update my sig rig. i am actually back to using my basic intel H67 board so I have 1x pci-e x16 slot and I have my GPU in that which is taking up 3 slots. The remaining slot is my PCI slot. I am thinking that having a card underneath it should not be an issue with how big the 3 fans are on the cooler.

I want to say the gaming and music is 50/50... but maybe gaming is 60 and music 40. Its just very hard to say because I often listen to music while I am gaming lol.

Audio-Technica, I have the M50s and only bought them after I listened to every headphone I could find under $300. These were my clear favorite, if you look around on headphone-related websites you'll see they have an enormous amount of hype surrounding them. It seems like everyone loves them.

Quick note: the M50 has a coiled cable which is pretty annoying, the M50s has a straight cable and (IMO) is the one to get.

thank you very much for your response. Some people have said that the M50s do not have a good soundstage and are not good for gaming? would you disagree with this? That is really my only main concern about the M50.

Do you use yours with a soundcard or onboard? I am looking at getting the Xonar DG since all I have is a PCI slot to use (if a soundcard is needed/recommended)

+rep to both of you for responding to my question!

Their soundstage isn't the best, but they should be more than fine for gaming. Their music performance more than makes up for it, the soundstage isn't bad it's just not as large as some other headphones. I have a $500 pair of Sennheiser HD650s and to be honest the soundstage on those isn't even that much better.

I've used my M50s with a FiiO desktop amp, straight out of my iPhone and everything in between...they're very easy to drive so they always sound great. The only reason you would use an external DAC is to reduce the amount of noise (from the computer) which you would hear as static or white noise in the background. If you have the headphones on with no music playing, through onboard audio you will hear a bit of noise but with an external DAC all you hear is silence. Depending on the sound card (I have no experience with the Xonar) it will fall somewhere in between but I would say it's probably not really worth it. Get the headphones and then see if you feel like you need it in the future.
