7970 EyeFinity?

post #1 of 21
Thread Starter
I'm looking at possibly selling both my 5870's and buying a 7970. Just wondering something I can't really get a solid answer on. Is there a such thing as a 7970 EyeFinity or do the normal 7970's have more than 2 monitor capability? My 5870's can only send video to two connections at a time even though the card has 2 DVI, 1 HDMI and 1 miniDP. So, I got an EyeFinity card and plugged all 3 plus my TV (4) into that, which works great.

Long story short I need 3 monitors (not EyeFinity grouped necessarily... just 3 displays. 1 windows, other 2 extended) with 1 single 7970. Possible without active converters? It can be DVI/DVI/DVI. I have converters.

EDIT: Also which brand should I get? Is there a brand that's the best this time around? I'm looking at the Sapphire I guess but there's a Powercolor for 30 less.

Thanks

AFAIK, all HD5870s have Eyefinity built-in. You can connect three displays but one of them must be via a Dislay Port.  Back then you must have tried to use DVI+DVI+HDMI for 3 monitors with your first HD5870 and thus failed because you neglected to use the DP.  Your second HD5870 card must be a Sapphire Flex edition which allows you to connect four displays (3 monitors plus 1 TV).

Anyway, there is no such thing as HD7970 Eyefinity edition.  There will likely be an Eyefinity 6 edition that supports 6 monitors but, at this moment, all HD7970s support Eyefinity up to four displays.  With the HD7970 comes a newer version of Eyefinity, ie 2.0.  However, the requirement of of Display Port remains.

A reference HD7970 has one DVI, one HDMI and two mini DP outputs. So,

With TV connected

(1) card's DVI output -->DVI-to-DVI cable--> 1st monitor's DVI input

(2) card's mini DP output --> active single link miniDP-to-DVI adapter (come free with card) -->DVI-to-DVI cable --> 2nd monitor's DVI input

(3) card's mini DP output --> active single link miniDP-to-DVI adapter (buy an active single link adapter.  See below for suggestion) -->DVI-to-DVI cable --> 3rd monitor'sDVI input

(4) card's HDMI output --> HDMI-to-HDMI cable --> TV's HDMI input

Without the TV connected

(1) card's DVI output -->DVI-to-DVI cable--> 1st monitor's DVI input

(2) card's mini DP output --> active single link miniDP-to-DVI adapter (come free with card) -->DVI-to-DVI cable --> 2nd monitor's DVI input

(3) card's HDMI output --> HDMI-to-DVI cable --> 3rd monitor's DVI input

As far as brand and model are concerned, I think most HD7970s available now are of reference PCB design and cooling.  Only a very few (eg XFX) have released non reference design.  So, they are no difference in this regard.  So, the decision has to be upon warranty, price, customer support...etc

AMD Eyefinity validated dongle (Accell B087B-006B) for $29 :-

Eyefinity or just extended desktop, for 3 monitors at least 1 must have native DisplayPort or you will need an active adapter. For 4 monitors, 2 must have DisplayPort. Reference 7970 can drive 4 independent monitors simultaneously.

It depends which 7970 you will get, not all of them come with supplied active adapters. Sapphire 7970 comes with 1 miniDP to DVI Single Link Active Adapter. Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE 21197-00-40G Radeon HD 7970 3GB ...

If you need the TV HDMI (total 4 monitors), can directly plug to 7970 HDMI port and need to buy additional this active adapter;

Monitor #1, DVI > DVI > 7970

HDMI #2, HDMI > HDMI > 7970

Monitor #3, DVI > DVI-MiniDP Active Adapter > 7970

Monitor #4, DVI > DVI-MiniDP Active Adapter > 7970

Alright thanks guys. I wasn't aware that's how it worked. I do have that Accel adapter already and the Sapphire comes with some so that will work. I'll use the DVI and both MiniDP for my monitors and then plug my TV into the HDMI.

Thanks again! I guess I'll go with the Sapphire. The powercolor is tempting due to the price but I have to wonder why it's the cheapest one everywhere I look....

If your 5870s are using Mini DisplayPort instead of DisplayPort, just plug in the Accell active adapter to 7970. Otherwise, you will need MiniDP to DP adapter cable. Should be included with the Sapphire 7970 (one only).

Monitor, DVI > DVI-DP Active Adapter > DP-MiniDP adapter cable > 7970

Alright People...new addon question. Sure You can do 3 monitors, but can you run a fourth 30" off the HDMI?

I have 2 6870's now, and found out that eyefinity only works if you have all the monitors hooked to the first card. I have issues all the time with one monitor going out (2 in each card right now).

Could I do Four 30" monitors?
Will the new HDMI Stardard (which says it will push 4096 x 3112) work? Does it need an adapter?

Thanks for your help!

If this is your 6870;

14-150-521-TS?$S300W$

You can driver 4 monitors simultaneously;

Monitor #1, DVI > DVI > Primary 6870

Monitor #2, HDMI > HDMI > Primary 6870

Monitor #3, DVI > DVI-Mini DP Active Adapter > Primary 6870

Monitor #4, DVI > DVI-Mini DP Active Adapter > Primary 6870

You need to buy 2 of these adapters below.

Good lucks.

I'm able to do Eyefinity on 3 monitors and a 4th on my regular sapphire 6870.

I have FOUR 30" MONITORS RUNNING 2560x1600.

HDMI on the 6870 can only run 1920X1200 (which is why I'm thinking about the 7970). I have 2 U3011's (and two older dell 30" DVI-D's) and am wondering if the new HDMI standard will work with just a HDMI cord now...no special features needed on the montior? I have the active usb powered adaptors for the MiniDP to DVI-D...I just need to know about the HDMI.

Thanks!

The monitor also has to support the new HDMI standard.
