You've got some proof for that? Yes, performance is likely to be less than with four separate processors (given they are single core) or two (dual core) processors. But cost will also play a role here. I am still pretty impressed with the performance of the Kentsfield, and a set up with a two CPU slot motherboard and four single core CPUs will be more expensive (esp. when the cheaper kents come out)

Heat might be an issue, but I don't think it will be that big a deal. We'll have to see about that. Shared cache might actually be an advantage (there is a reason to go for that), again, mostly from a cost/benefit analysis.

Software developers WILL NOT invest into creations for a small percentage
of quad-core owners who want it. The software companies want to write for the common people who have common computer configurations, because they are the mass where the money is.
Experimental divisions of a software company will venture into codes for a quad core, but the money to be made comes from the common computer user, not the extreme high end user.
I dont see a need to spend loads on "top of the line techno" when the software hasn't yet caught up to utilize all of it.

Since the 'mass' is still single core, how come there are already applications (Photoshop!) that support dual core? I do believe that software developers DO invest in new technology, not because it's mainstream now, but because it will be in the future.

I have always been a fan of multiple processor technology, and am happy that they are doing multiple core stuff these days.

However, it seems that they are progressing much too quickly.

To me it seems that the microprocessor companies are just starting to slap some more cores into these things while adding some cheap cache.

Not to sound biased, but it seems to me that AMD has done a better job with the technology aspect of the multiple cores whereas Intel seemd tp be carelessly incresing clock speed and adding cores to dazzle customers. (*cough* Nvidia *cough*)

In short, I think both companies should spend more time making single core or dual core better before moving on.

Regarding the Kentsfield, you are right. But the move Intel makes here is understandable from a marketing point of view. AMD will come out with Quad Core, so Intel is better to have Quad Core also, even though it means they'll have two dual cores glued on one die. What I fail to see is Intel raisign clock speeds.. I have not seen any high-speed Core 2 Duo CPUs (they could be a lot faster, look at the headroom we have overclocking them). For now, I have not seen any performance from AMD's new technology, and until then I don't think we should comment too much on it

I dont see the trend with core 2 duo chips going for high clock speeds yet. I did notice that thats the trend Intel took with the p4s. All of a sudden there was a 3.8ghz stock chip on the market (for a bit). I do think they did the right thing with the centrino technology, but thats not relevant to this.

Centrino is partly relevant, since the Core 2 Duo tech is based on the technology used for Centrino.

Also, AMD is now doing the same as Intel did... releasing CPUs at higher clock speeds (understandable, to compete with Core 2 Duo)
http://www.overclock.net/news-overcl...highlight=5000 X2 6000+ at 3.0 GHz... yikes. Also, that thing draws a whopping 125W AT STOCK! (double that of Core 2 Duo)

Man i hope amd's quads will beat intel's, i hate core2duo because i don't have money to switch intel now. jk. The core thing is progressing very fast. I wouldn't be surprised if the octuple cores comes out at the end of 2007...
