Those prices are stupidly high. Dethrone Intel? Please... At those prices, Intel has them largely outleagued. AMD Just can't lower the price enough..

AMD have lost there advantage in the CPU world totally. There simply scared IMO and are just boosting up there clock speeds to keep up with Intel even if its slightely. However IMO they have a while to go and yes that is rather hot.
I wonder what AMD plans for the lower end of the market. They might take the ultra-high end of the market, if indeed performance is what's it supposed to be (and yes, I do assume a single quad core AMD CPU will beat Kentsfield - by a hair). However, Core 2 Duo is creating havoc at the upper end of the budget market and the enter mid level and most of the high-end right now.

Is AMD going to be happy to leave the largest blocks of the markets to Intel? They should really create some noise about what is going to be a dollar-for-dollar competitor for Core 2 Duo.

Thats gonna end up like $3000 just for the CPU + Mobo + RAM. Add SLI or Crossfire and tack on another $1000. Plus youll need a decent PSU around 800W to power all that, and along with storage, add-ins and peripherals, that adds on about another $1000.

Final price: ~$5000

Is it just me, or does all this sound a little absurd, especially since youll probably be able to build a comparable Kentsfield system for around half that?

What are you thinking AMD?

4x4 will NOT be on server mobo's. Just because the socket is F doesn't mean they are going to use existing mobo's (anyone know of SLI or Crossfire capable socket F ECC server boards???). I'm sure there will be 4x4 specific mobo's and the 4x4 intended cpu's will have the socket F pinout but will use regular DDR2, not ECC. They are trying for a performance/enthusiast setup and would not be stupid enough to cripple it that way.

I agree it will be on an enthusiast platform, but that's going to be some headaches for motherboard manufacturers to get a BIOS going with all that and such...dual CPU overclock option..... wow. Also, I wonder how sensitive it's goign to be toward CPU speed variations and such.

They'll come. At the moment , there aren't many socket F boards in the first place. There are dual socket 940 motherboards that support SLI, like this one here: http://www.supermicro.com/Aplus/moth...orce/H8DCE.cfm, and since socket F is the succesor of socket 940, I don't see why these type of boards won't show up for socket F.

This one here: http://www.supermicro.com/Aplus/moth...55/H8DAE-2.cfm actually does have two PCI-E x16 slots, but SLI support is not mentioned (nor Crossfire). But hey, we know that SLI can be ran on nearly every dual PCI-E x16 slot board with modded drivers, so why not on this one?

As far as I know, Socket F boards will only be able to support ECC registered DDR2, same as all 940 boards did. If they did support regular DDR2 for the FX-7x CPUs, theyd have to key the socket so that you couldnt just drop a Socket F Opteron in there and not have it work with the regular DDR2 RAM.

Why is everyone flaming AMD for doing this? It's not like this move hasn't been done in the past before. AMD held the lead for years with K8 before C2D finally came out and what did Intel do to try to close the performance gap? Increased the clock speed. The best answer to closing the performance gap is getting the next generation chip out the door ASAP, but since AMD can't get its next generation chip out the door any faster, the only thing it can do is boost its current chips in every way possible via slashing prices and/or increasing clock speed. IMO this is a smart move on AMD's part rather than sit around twoodling their thumbs and handing the market to Intel. It shows that they are willing to fight.

Do you think AMD would rather go bust than lower the price of the current highr end chips?
