- At least 6GB of RAM, possibly even 8GB, much higher transfer rates.
- GPUs that are magnitudes faster. Rather than a GPU with 256-512MB of RAM, and a GPU running at 500Mhz you'll see something like a custom AMD 6970 with 2GB of RAM in the consoles.
I would expect a mandatory 60fps 1080p minimum for all next-gen Xbox and Playstation games, and possibly even 1080p 3D with 60fps per eye. It may sound crazy for a 6970, but you have to consider that the GPUs are customized for the consoles to do certain things much faster than the equivalent PC hardware. That's what you get when you have GPUs made for a single hardware spec, and you don't need drivers whatsoever.
I'm also tired of people comparing iPad and mobile games to consoles. Sorry, but I won't be sitting down anytime soon to play Skyrim on my iPad, I'll be at a computer or 55" HDTV on a console relaxing with a dual analog controller. And even if you have your iPad running a game and hooked up to your HDTV, it's not a breeze to just connect a controller to it, and you won't get anywhere near the image quality as a brand new console would get you, because if you could consoles would be much smaller.
Unless the next gen consoles come out 3-5 years from now, just no. Look at past console generations. None have had such a huge gap in performance and RAM as what you're proposing here.
You're proposing a "console" with a 400+ watt power draw and an $8-900 price tag. No one on earth is going to buy, let alone produce, such a thing.
Also, you give the precise reasons why you don't need such crazy amounts of resources/processing power with a console - because it's a single hardware spec. It can be optimized like crazy, and would never need so much RAM/everything else. (PC games don't even use more than 2GB of RAM and you're suggesting consoles should have 8 - rofl)
You're also ignoring the fact that a new iPad is released something like every year - new consoles are not. So the same is going to be true 2-4 years after the next console generation - netbooks, etc. will have more GPU power.Edited by pursuinginsanity - 1/20/12 at 9:21pm
