7000 series - When to expect?

Hi everyone.

So I've been the reasonably content owner of a 6870 for some time (reference design - i say with pride) sadly, though, it cannot manage the games i play (BF3, Skyrim).

Why? well it only has 1GB of memory. at 1920x1080 res and texture pack mods (Skyrim for example) I'm getting alot of thrashing, and i can't deal with it anymore, so i'm selling.

Crossfire isn't an option. I've bad experiences with Crossfire back in the 3870x2 days and the frequent stories i hear of games today still suffering with similar problems puts me off altogether - I still think it's a waste of money/gimmicky/bragging rights only and certainly not worth the investment. So i'm looking to upgrade to a 7000 series GPU which all seem to boast at minimum 2GB of VRAM.

I've been to UK retailer sites like Overclockers and I'm very disappointed in the price of these cards, which seem to go in excess of £400+ ($600) (LOL)

So, i'm here to ask:

1. Anyone know of a better seller to buy hardware from?

2. Anyone know when to expect these cards to be cheaper/when to expect models below the 7900 series?

I was thinking of maybe upgrading to a higher 6000 series card but i'm struggling to find any reference design board with over 2GB of VRAM - i wanted at least 3GB.

Any help will be rewarded, thanks smile.gif

The 7950 will be "released" on Jan 31st. This is a paper release, so more than likely for sale two weeks later maybe. Unknown on the other cards.

1792 Stream processors
3GB GDDR5

Assume it can be overclocked like a beast. Just like the 7970

Sounds...expensive.

Any idea on what the specs of the mid range/low range cards are? (7870 - if it exists?)

Nothing definitive. I would assume the 7870 or equivalent will have at least 1.5gb vram maybe even two. The fact that the went from 2gb to 3 gb might signal a 50 bump in vram on the next gen cards, the reference ones at least.

Maybe its just speculation on my part but i assume the 7870 will on par with a 6970 that will overclock higher. Vram count seems unsure.

Than again its all speculation lol. $269 starting price maybe ?

Thanks for the help.

I'll probably wait till i see a 7950/7870's specs in the shops before making my decision. If there's 3GB VRAM models i'll invest in one of those once the price drops - if it does at all.

Otherwise, i might just invest in a 2GB 6950, if i can find a reference design.
