HDMI > DVI > VGA?

Thread Starter
Hey everyone,

quick question. What is the easiest way to go from an HDMI output to VGA input? Example: HDMI is out from an apple TV going into a VGA projector. Could it be done by taking an HDMI to DVI, and then DVI to VGA? Like a franken-adapter?

Thanks

The easiest way is to buy a HDMI to VGA adapter - otherwise your other adapter solution SHOULD work, though with a lot of quality loss going through a bunch of adapters smile.gif

HDMI to VGA does work. It's just the adapters for that are hard to come by.

And they're expensive because you need an active adapter, since its transcoding the digital HDMI signal to analog VGA signal.

HDMI to VGA requires an active adapter (adapter that uses power), since you are converting digital to analog. Unlike DVI where it carries both digital and analog signal (therefore a cheap passive adapter will do), HDMI does not carry analog signal. Active adapter is considerably more expensive than passive adapter.

The above takes HDMI to DP to VGA. I'm not sure if that DP to VGA adapter will work (whether or not it supports dual mode DP), this is your best shot. DP uses a different types of digital signal, and unless it supports dual mode, cannot use the digital signal from HDMI.

Honestly, get yourselves a new monitor/projector.
