Abit fatal1ty problems...

Thread Starter
Ok i just finished building a computer for a friend of mine, and here is the problem we are having. the computer starts up, no post screeen, after 2 seconds you hear beeeeeeeep, pause, beeeeeep, pause...(continues until shutdown). The little POST code display on the motherbaord shows "AF".

It's a 3.2ghz pentium 4 lga775 socket

Things I've already tried:

1) swapped ram through all 4 slots
2) unplugged HDDs and CD drives
3) Cleared CMOS and removed battery

Anyone have an idea what "AF" might mean? or maybe something we can try?

I'm not sure, but it's overheating or RAM failing. RAM failing could also mean the CPU is messed up if it's an AMD CPU you're using.

What's the mobo...I know fatal1ty, but what kind? The AA8XE?

They have the mobo on abit's website somewhere, and you can view its user manual on pdf format and see what those post codes mean on the board.

I was reading around, and that code isn't even in the manual....but they said it could be bad ram/ bad video card.

Try each stick alone that will rule out the ram if not the ram RMA the board cause it is shot!!!

Have seen this issue before and only thing to do once the ram is ruled out is that ist a bad Mobo.

Sorry but thats the way it looks for you.

Good Luck

I got it fixed last night. See, my friend bought his parts from a shiesty little computer parts computer store, and the guy said he was givin him a deal casue he knew his dad... yeah right lol, but anyway, i took his case down there and asked the guy to swap out the ram cause i think its bad. (super talent ram... the name says it all lol). After about 5minutes of convincing him that his crappy ram was probably dead, he switches it out, and yay, now it posts.

Pretty quick rig my firends got there. Just needs some better hdds and ram.

Actually, Supertalent makes some really badass ram- they have a ddr2 800 kit out that's really good. I believe mtuccio has it.

I am building a AA8XE based system to be donated to a poor kid who likes gaming and computers but doesn't have the resorces to have a decent computer. In building this system with a Pentium 550 and Corsair XMS DDR2 667, 700 watts Powerstream. Using stock cooling just to get it going, but a BT is going in as soon as I can find the mounting kit in the pile of spares.

So my problem is: when I power the system, it does all the motions to start... then beeps and shuts down. Post codes are: 86, 87, 9b, 9e, 9f. Beeping is 1 long, 3 short. I found that this particualr beep sequence is attributed to a bad keyboard, which I propmtly changed to get more of the same. (http://forum.abit-usa.com/showthread.php?t=98625)

But to make this more interesting: I had the rig up and running and while installing drivers all sort of beeps went off and the system shut down. After that I have been unable to pass the above noted post codes.

I have a set of Dominators that will be throwing in shortly, just to rule out memory problems. But if anyone has any idea what else it could be, please post.

SOLVED: Be sure to push the power cables into the mobo all the way.
