Oh Crap!!! What have I done?

Help!

I Oc'd to 3.4 yesterday afternoon and was running 2 instances of Prime95. After 7-8 minutes into the torture test my rig just stops. It was really shocking...it just silently stopped.

I waited a few minutes to see if I could smell anything - I didn't. I turned the rig back on, and it seemed to power up correctly. XP did not give me any error messages about inproper shutdown, I did not get any error messages at all.

I have returned the rig to the specs in my profile.

Everything seems to be working , except the 7900GT seems off. When I run 3dMark06 my FPS have dropped drastically. Games (I use FEAR and HL2:E1 as benchmarks) are a little lower. FEAR's built-in test has dropped slightly overall and so has Hl2:E1.

I put the card back to stock settings and then re-OC'd it - same.

First, does anyone have any idea *** I did wrong as far as the rig just quitting? And, has anyone heard of this VGA issue or seen something like it?

Coolbits seems to be applying the OC, but the 3DMark score just sucks!

Is there a way that I can test the card to troubleshoot it? This card is volt-modded to 1.492v.

What about ATI Tool? I have never used that on an nVidia card. And it has been awhile since I used it at all.

Please, help!!!

When you say "I put the card back to stock settings and hen re-OC'd it -- same" do you mean, it shut off again? I doubt its a heat issue, but do you have any tools to monitor your temps? I would only doubt this because usually heat kills the PC before the first hour of torture.

Can you just loop 3d06 and see what happens, then loop something CPU intensive like Prime or Toast and see what happens. I think the key is to narrow it down to a specific component. If you cant, then it may be something more difficult to track down, like the power supply. Memtest is another thing. Now I dont think its your CPU or memory, but its good to rule them out.

Driver corruption, while rare, is also a possibility. I would back up my stuff if I were you, though, just to be safe. borrow an external hard drive or burn stuff to a DVD if you have a DVD-burner.

Thanks for the replies:

My rig didn't freeze, it shut off - full power off. It isn't an issue with the power to the PSU as It is hooked up to a UPS.

Maybe this modular PSU = POS ..?

I was considering a non-modular, any recommendations?

I guess I would like to know why the system simply stopped. Is there a tool that I can use (other than a multi-meter ) to test the PSU? Do the PSU testers sold on ZZZ or Newegg get the job done?

Thanks for your time guys

did you volt mod it or did you have a pro do it cause that could be it.. or you could have just melted some traces :S not really sure though.. this is why nvidia will be #2 in my book.. look at my signature .. lol what i can suggest is mabey taking a close look at your card looking for any burn marks or any scorched pieces of the agp/pcie? slot to make sure any traces are burned out there if worst comes to worst check the back of your mobo and see if anything is gone there 0.0 . it could jsut be something as simple as one of your drivers got corrupted nope i helped in some way

rabies229,

Thanks for the input. I will open her up this afternoon and take a look-see. Yes, I did the volt-mod myself. It was a clean job, as I used painters tape to mark off the traceway. I am fairly competant when it comes to electrical/mechanical stuff (not as much as I would like), and I tested the voltage with a reliable meter (1.492v)

I'll run the meter over the test points to see what's up. Thanks again!

P.S. are you born on Leap-year? (rabies....229)

1) Have you tried increasing your vCore.
2) Did you recently change any of your windows drivers?
3)What version of Forceware are you using.
4)What are your current temps?
5)What powersupply are you using and do you show steady 12v rail distribution at or above 12v as reported by speedfan?

Oh, Crap!! update...

Okay, I don't know what happened.

My main concern is that my rig was running, and it simply powered off. No freeze, no Prime95 failure, just palin off!

Does anyone know what might cause this (not the power from the wall socket - I have UPS)? I have had all of the previously mentioned symptoms, just not this one.

It seems that all is back to normal. When I got home today I ran 3DMark06 and the FEAR test. 3DMark is back to 6300+ points, and FEAR is back to 100% > 40 fps with the min @ 48; max @ 89.

Everything seems to be okay, sorry for having a spastic fit earlier. Thanks for all the replies. I am now running the Vcore @ 1.36 on the CPU so it will stay stable. Any comments on that rating?

Thanks again guys!
