Portal 2 Low FPS - Need Advice

Hello,

I'm kind of confused right now, because I don't know why I am getting such low fps

My PC specs are

AMD FX-6100@ stock speed
8GB DDR3 RAM 1333mhz
nVidia 285GTX stock speed also

I'm getting around 20fps at start screen and 5-10 ingame

I even did benchmarks and they come out really normal, nothing suspicious

Any advise?

Latest nvidia drivers?
Sounds like your GPU isn't even being utilized...

Yes, even tried BETA drivers

might be broken drivers. i had the same problem a few days ago (with my GTX 590) everygame ran slow and benchmark programs like MSI Kombuster ran normal, basically reinstalling the drivers fixed the problem for me.

Have you already checked:

*Temperatures for throttling of some kind?
*PSU is still in good shape and delivering enough power?
*Corrupt installation / or OS / or HDD?

Ok, I will uninstall the drivers now and make a fresh driver setup, you will hear from me in about 20minutes again

@GanjaSMK

Temp is about 50° Idle (celsius)
I have a 750W PSU which I have for over 2 years now
my HDD seem to be ok since it's only Portal 2, but I didn't really try out many new games, will install a copy of skyrim tomorrow and check again

Definitely try to replicate (the problem or) similar performance in other games as it might help to find the cause of the issue.

It's drivers or hardware basically unless you have some really random configuration of software (unlikely). tongue.gif

Install 266.58 drivers, and do a clean install. Don't install the HD Audio driver, it'll screw up your regular sound card. Don't bother with driver cleaner or any of that crap, just install the drivers over the top, and select "clean install".

For me, anything newer than 266.58 absolutely sucks, and this is across 3 different machines.

To be sure we're not missing something obvious, is your monitor connected to your graphics card's video ports? Or your motherboard's integrated graphics port?
