i dont have that setting in my BIOS, thats an ASUS thing right? I'm not sure how that setting relates to my BIOS...?
Funnily enough i haven't tried overclocking on stock voltage. I started off by using auto volts and only started setting it manually once i wanted to go above 4.1Ghz. With this current overclock on auto volts it goes as high as 1.32v sometimes. I've found that if the voltage is allowed to drop below 1.3v the CPU will underclock under load. Switching from LLC 5 to LLC 4 sorted this. Would i be right in thinking this proves that i need somewhere around 1.3v to achieve my current 4.1Ghz OC? Still i will try overclocking on stock voltage and see what the outcome is. Thanks man smile.gif
I am doing it right lol. I know when you dont really know someone its hard to tell their level of experience so i dont blame you, but im not a newbie at all, i just haven't messed with overclocking much in all my years and its only something thats really interested me as of late. i think the only reason why ive resorted to posting this thread is because ive been pretty unlucky with my purchased hardware rather than being completely clueless about what im doing. just wanted to say that tongue.gif
im gonna try what you've suggested though. the CMOS seems to reset just fine when i use the button but its worth a shot taking out the battery and/or resetting with the jumpers. I'll make sure i reseat everything in the board to. thanks thumb.gif
this one keeps coming up lol.... i do have that setting enabled thumb.gif appreciate the response smile.gif

After resetting CMOS make sure to ONLY change the multiplier.

And add vcore along the way. Only 2 options to tweak with and see if you get any results.

This its what I'm thinking, interested tho see the results.

When I first started tweaking mine I was having all kinds of issues and couldn't OC for crap. Mainly it was my LLC that seemed to be giving me my troubles, so I ended up on some forum reading about a bug in the old BIOS with LLC Level 2 and restarts, amongst other things. I decided to just set my LLC to Level 1 and haven't looked back since (knock on wood). Also, the V you are going up too seems much too high for 4ghz and double check your ram settings since my board was setting the ram lower then what it should have been. I thought you said you were going to try the new BEAT BIOS in another thread and I personally would not use the BETA if you are not having the issues it specifically address....for now.

this worked for me
fix your V at ~1.30V ( my V is lower, but this is just a starting point. i would work back if this is stable)
Set the CPU Ratio to 40
Short Duration PL = 200
Long Duration PL = 200
Long Duration Main = 1
Core Current Limit = 200

I also disabled
C3
C6

hope some of this helps

guys ive done everything suggested in this thread and more. the best i can do is get it to boot at 4.2Ghz but it crashes very quickly. im not saying i couldn't get 4.2Ghz stable but the voltages i'll probably need just aint worth it by any means. ive noticed that people keep coming along and suggesting the same stuff over and over again... ive realised that ive exhausted everyones ideas...

my conclusion is that i either have a cpu that just doesn't like overclocking, or the bios on this board is crap. i'll wait for the next proper bios release and try again. so for now im just seeing how low i can set the voltage and keep 4.1Ghz stable. So far it is absolutely fine on 1.2v so i will see now if i can get it lower.

just wanna say thanks to all who tried to help me out here. there were plenty of good suggestions from you all but there's only so much that could be done...

cheers thumb.gif

Sorry to hear that you're having a tough time, could you kindly post your BIOS settings as you currently have them.

Just a few questions:

1)
Prior to building your new rig, did you install a fresh OS?

2)
Have you checked your HDD for any anomalies (HDtune / chkdsk etc)?

3)
Checked RAM at stock (memtest)?

Thanks.

mate seriously - it wont go past 4.1Ghz. I'm 99% sure it's either the CPU or the BIOS/MOBO that's causing it. I'm just gonna leave it until the next BIOS update is out then try again. I do appreciate the help and your excellent overclocking guide though - thanks man thumb.gif

All of the things that that Munaim1 listed could also easily affect stability of an OC.

What BIOS rev are you running?

I would like to help determine whether or not it is the board or the CPU. So please when you get the time, post your screenshots and also answers to the questions above.

Thanks.
